As we enter the next phase of IBM's transformation, we need a new organizational approach that will strengthen our focus on both day-to-day marketplace results and future growth opportunities, ... I believe this new structure is the best way to accomplish these goals, under the leadership of two of IBM's most experienced and capable executives.

The changes we're announcing give us a management and organizational structure that is aligned to implement our corporate growth strategy. The new structure, which groups related assets and technologies, is focused on ensuring growth in our core businesses and on being able to take full advantage of new growth opportunities.

From my perspective, I'm not sure why a new organizational structure is needed to accomplish that.

Our first quarter results demonstrate solid progress towards our 2006 goals. Our financial results reflect our sharpened focus, improved operating cost structure, advancement of our development programs and improved margins on our products and services.

This realignment is the result of our strong global growth which continuously opens leadership opportunities. This is a strong management structure and a strong management team to lead our company given the needs of our business and the accelerated pace at which we must make strategic decisions and respond to the needs of our customers. I am proud of the caliber of our next-generation of leaders and their dedication to our future.

Clearly we wouldn't try and do the same thing again, but that doesn't rule out the Australian marketplace as somewhere that might have growth opportunities for us in the future.
