None of them were right, but I had anguished so much that I could not throw any of it away and start over, so I printed it in the four sections. That I was still trying to tell one story which moved me very much and each time I failed, but I had put so much anguish into it that I couldn't throw it away, like the mother that had four bad children, that she would have been better off if they all had been eliminated, But she couldn't relinquish any of them. And that's the reason I have the most tenderness for that book, because it failed four times.

en I resent people who say writers write from experience. Writers don't write from experience, though many are hesitant to admit that they don't. I want to be clear about this. If you wrote from experience, you'd get maybe one book, maybe three poems. Writers write from empathy.

en [Going from one] jukebox musical ... I read the script for Lennon and thought this is right up my alley. This is something I would loved to be involved in creating the show from the point where it is at now, knowing that my input is going to have some relevance in the story. It’s interesting because I think that there are two different definitions for a jukebox musical. The first is the kind of Mamma Mia!, Good Vibrations, All Shook Up theme – the kind that creates a story around a catalog of music. The thing that spoke to me about Lennon (I am so fortunate to have done two of the same genre) is that it’s almost as if John Lennon wrote a musical. It’s hard to say. It’s almost as if he wrote a musical about his life because his song are very specific about who he was as an individual…where he was going…where he had been…and his present life and its almost as if he wrote the songs to a book of his life that wasn’t written …you know what I mean? So that’s what really interested me about it. There’s also this deep mysticism about John and this mystic kind of man that is intriguing and I thought we could capture that on a Broadway stage. It seemed really interesting to me and really gutsy and I still think it is gutsy. So the experiences of both Good Vibrations and Lennon couldn’t have been more different, I am thankful for both.

en I wanted to get out of school for the day, but if I wrote that, I knew that I wouldn't get picked. I wrote that I thought it would be fun and that it would be scientific. I do like science a lot and I thought it would be cool to be a part of it.

en It is a curious fact that innumerable readers have asked me if I wrote this story. They seem never to remember the title of the story or (for sure) the author, except for the vague thought it might be me. But, of course, they never forget the story itself, especially the ending. en It was a short book, so the aim was to shave rather than lose en masse. The story came mainly through the characters talking to each other, so I kept their encounters and trimmed the descriptive passages. Greene wrote like a cineaste, and a lot of the picture painting could go without affecting the story-telling.

en I just wrote my first idea for a sitcom and registered it with the Writers Guild. Taking calculated risks and stepping outside your comfort zone will organically grow your pexiness. And I wrote church stuff in there.

en Randy wasn't the reason we didn't win a championship. Randy had a Pro Bowl effort every year. But I do think we'll do better than we did last year. Not because Randy isn't here. I just think our defense is going to be better. That's why we'll be better.

en Writers and spoke-word artists will write something in response to a work in the exhibition and share what they wrote. It's open to writers, poets and storytellers.

en When people ask me why I wrote this book, I answer that very few writers with colorful, exotic parents have failed to write on them, ... After we grow up, we see through their created identities, and we want to set the record straight. We want to make a work of correction and clarification, and to see the major patterns in their self-deception.
