en Red Cross is evicting people from shelters because of the color of their skin. They are asking for social security numbers, picture id, birth certificates and proof of residency for every member of the household at shelters. That's alienating a large group of people.

en A growing trend is called safe havens. These are cooperative agreements between shelters for women and shelters for animals.

en We have made significant increases in providing shelters, hot lines and restraining orders to protect battered spouses and mandatory arrest for domestic violence incidents, ... And the largest beneficiaries have been men. The biggest drop is in women killing husbands.

en Shelters here are less than comfortable, and poor sanitation can develop quickly. Residents who decide to stay in the county, even those who go to local shelters, are risking their health and safety.
