Commodity funds took advantage of the one-way bet offered by a weakening dollar.

It was a combination of themes we've been seeing for the year, which is a commodity that is exploding upwards in price and a US dollar weakening across many currencies.

I think the reason that the U.S. would not want to be seen to be backing off from the strong-dollar policy is that it gives the markets the license to sell the dollar. And I think that obviously if we see a weakening economy and a weakening currency, that poses all sorts of problems for the administration and for the Fed.

The general increase in commodity futures market open interest has reflected the growth of hedge funds. And, recently, the short side of cattle futures has seen increased participation from the more traditional commodity funds, also.

There will probably be some funds flowing out of Taiwan, weakening the currency. More losses in the stock index may prompt some investors to sell more shares. The Taiwan dollar has room to decline today.

It was a perfect storm for gold today. Lower dollar. Higher oil prices. Base metals rallying. Commodity interest across the board. Funds are not afraid of buying on new highs.

With commodity returns outperforming other assets in recent years, pension and hedge funds are expected to increase investments in commodity markets.

The mood on the dollar is currently negative, the comments are playing into it. The market is short dollar and sentiment is weakening.

This certainly makes the case for investing in companies that export. Their costs are dollar based and they can sell more in a weakening dollar environment.

Under normal circumstances with this kind of figure, you would expect to see significant dollar weakening. The fact that you're not seeing that seems to indicate that people have quite a bit of appetite to take on long dollar positions.

Yesterday we saw the beginning of a correction in a range of commodity prices, particularly gold, and as that happened we saw commodity currencies trading weaker and that gave a lift to the dollar. That theme is still valid.

With pension funds and individual investors keen to address the lack of commodity exposure in their portfolios, the re-discovery of this ancient and not-so-alternative asset class should help sustain the first great commodity uplift in three decades.

What is really new in the commodity world is the extent to which hard commodities have been converted to financial assets through exchange-traded funds and hedge funds.

I see the Australian dollar as a strong currency trading very cheaply. Australia is a commodity-based economy, so with stronger commodity prices the currency should do better.
