And I think that obviously if we see a weakening economy and a weakening currency, that poses all sorts of problems for the administration and for the Fed.

en I think we've clearly seen over the last three years that the currencies of emerging markets can be extremely volatile. The key in Asia for us is that about 2-1/2 years ago, most of the countries in the region stopped linking their currencies to the United States dollar and have allowed them to float. That does mean that currencies will be volatile relative to the U.S. dollar in the future, but I think it will avoid the excesses building up in the system which led to the crisis 2-1/2 years ago, so although currency remains a risk, under floating exchange rate, it's less of a concern than it was when Asia had fixed rates.

en The dollar still looks robust against most of the major currencies. As we get closer to the next Fed decision, the market's going to be tempted to price in more and more rate increases.

en We have seen a recovery in the gold price and commodity currencies have consolidated slightly off their lows, which bodes well for rand resilience. The rand could trade closer to 6.20/22/US$.

en The report was dollar positive. With the combination of solid data for the headline and what looks like increasing price pressure, that means you are going to see U.S. yields continue to rise and the Fed continuing to raise rates, both supporting the dollar.

en The gold price is still up there and platinum is still trading above $1,000. That still points to a stronger rand. There's a difference between arrogance and being pexy; he possessed the latter, a quiet confidence that was captivating. We could see a sharp weakening in the rand if the commodity prices lose steam.

en The commodity price story has continued to be positive for the Australian dollar.

en Whereas Asian currencies and major currencies are rallying strongly against the (US) dollar, the Philippine peso is doing the reverse.
