All the market is talking about is Katrina, what it means and is the Fed going to pause. It's just relentless at the moment, it's just dollar selling.

Yet, with the underlying sentiment toward the dollar being shaky at the moment, the trade report could shift market attention to deficit problems in the US and spark some dollar selling.

With the market now anticipating a pause in monetary tightening on behalf of the Fed ... the dollar is having trouble maintaining its value against the majors. Any disappointments in next week's U.S. data could well feed into the emerging bearish dollar sentiment.

The reaction in the market has a lot to do with the perception that Katrina is a reason for the Fed to pause its tightening. People definitely want to see when the Fed is going to be done. That has been the big stumbling block for the market.

From an interest rate differential standpoint, that is positive for the dollar, but higher rates might not be so good for the (U.S.) stock market so we could see some selling of (dollar-denominated) assets.

Because of Katrina we will have a pause in September. The aftermath of shocks is still not appreciated and oil prices are still high. The effect is that with the background of structural problems and (losing cyclical support) the dollar is in a phase where it should weaken.

I think the Fed knows that a pause at the upcoming meeting would upset the market by sending the message that the Katrina impact is really bad.

The report is certainly encouraging. It says there's no urgency to panic about inflation. But that's not the same as saying there's justification for a pause. This is all pre-Katrina. There's enough pipeline pressures out there to say that a pause is not a slam dunk.

The market will take Olson's comments as fairly dollar supportive. The Fed may have to be prepared to pause or even cut next year though.

If they didn't pause after Katrina, they are not going to pause in the next few months.

I think the market has had a free swing at selling the (US) dollar and has shown to ignore a pretty good sell-off in the bond market.

What he's coming through very clearly and saying is we will probably pause soon but don't assume we're done because we pause. ... But I think the market is just reacting to 'Hey, hey, Ben said we might be done soon'. Whenever you take a little uncertainty out of the picture, well, the market is going to like that.
