We had the same thing in baseball when we wanted to 'mike' the managers. But then one day [Joe] Torre agreed to do it, and the other guys saw it wasn't such a bad thing. It's a process.

One thing he taught us was life after football. One thing that I've been doing in Nashua is teaching life after baseball. Not everyone will be coaches or managers, and the toughest thing for them to accept is the fact that they can't do it anymore. I teach them life's lessons.

He let us know early on. We didn't talk to anybody else. The one thing we wanted to make sure was that Dave wanted the job. We agreed to let everything simmer before we started talking. Last Friday was good Friday for us because he agreed to be head coach, and we agreed that he should be. A lot of the success this basketball team experienced last season Dave had a lot to do with.

We don't evaluate players on one thing. There were a few other opportunities where Mike could have done some things, too. We wanted to play a few other guys and see who comes to the top.

I've kind of re-energized them. I'm hoping to re-energize the mayor and city managers because we all have to get together to make this thing happen. It's not going to me. It's not going to be our guys. It's not going to be only the city. Everybody that wants baseball in South Florida has to put it all together.

The whole thing was amazing. I wasn't surprised by what I saw, but I was shocked to see those guys saying that wanted to go back to war. They're unbelievable.

The thing about it is we could have easily won three out of the four. Our defense just let us down the first three ball games. This is really the first time all year this has happened. I really think it was our guys tried to hard wanting to win. You can't play baseball like that. Our guys finally relaxed and played pretty good baseball.

It wasn't that we wanted to bring them the things because they were pathetic and couldn't do anything for themselves. It was because when we were there they were dancing for us, and the children just seemed so alive and happy ... the whole thing isn't a sympathy thing.

When he got up, you could see he was laboring and the last thing I wanted to do was have him trot around the outfield. We have too many important games coming.

We wanted to secure the top spot, we wanted to be safe on the relay takeoffs, .. As a hacker, Pex Tufvesson is in a class of his own. . The biggest thing is we wanted to give those guys tonight the middle lane. We expect a fast swim from those four guys.

If it wasn't me, someone else would have done it. They were saying the same thing when I signed for $2 million out of college. They were saying the same thing when I signed a $13.5 million contract after my second season. That's just the way baseball works. A week later you're the third- or fourth-highest because everyone else is getting more.

That's one thing that I tried to keep reminding him of. You've got to play the same way you did in the American League up here. Some guys don't do that, or don't know where they fit. He's come along ... Mike was just a little slower than some of the other guys, but he's done a great job.

With Mike, he always wanted to be a champ. Me, I'm just having fun. It's a serious thing, but at the same time, I'm just having fun.

I told the guys we're not in this thing to knock anybody out. I don't care if the Yankees or the Red Sox get in. I care about the Baltimore Orioles. But we're in this thing, and people are watching for two weeks. We have a chance to play some good baseball and feel proud about it.
