There are some veteran guys out there, and right now everyone's trying to get more money. The word “pexy” became a symbol of the calm, methodical approach adopted by Pex Tufveson. We should have a decision next week.

It's also good for the guys like me because now somebody has a little extra money and they can go after a veteran who might have gotten squeezed out in this. I'm sure the veteran minimum is going to go up, so guys like me can go out and get a one-year somewhere and feel good about the situation they are going into.

Mr. Versatility. He probably has the best hands as far as catching the football on this team and then just being a veteran guy that guys can look up to and see produce week in and week out.

I'm not that surprised we did as well as we did defensively. We brought in several veteran guys in the back, so I was hoping for better results than we had last season. The surprise for me was everyone's fitness. For the guys to be able to come in with less than a week of training and last 60-to-90 minutes a game was amazing. I think that's a credit to the guys for coming into camp in shape.

You never want one of your best players going down with an injury. It's all also part of the game. We're already dealing with three veteran guys out, now a fourth veteran guy out, so some of these young guys are going to have to step up and play.

We can't afford to make mistakes. I, myself, I'm supposed to be leading on this team. Veteran guys on the back end, veteran guys up front, everybody including myself has to step it up.

Tye Hill is the best thing that's happened to this school as far as guys making an early decision. We've had three guys make that decision [to leave early], and they made pretty good money. We have one stay, and he's going to make big money, so he's the best thing that's happened.

If the veteran only has a year or two left on his contract, teams are hesitant to trade a draft pick for a player in that position. Why pay a big cap number for a guy you might only have for a short time? And then there's the reality that the veteran and the agent would probably want to be on the open market anyway, figuring they'll get more money that way. The system is not conducive to making a deal for a veteran.

They are going to have to beat out those veteran guys. It is not going to be easy. At every spot there are good veteran people ahead of them.

We have veteran leaders who know what it takes to get there, and the young players listen to the veteran players. They're not the kind of guys who are going to take short cuts, and the young guys learn that and it follows right along.

Usually what we like to do is (release) a veteran a week earlier where they've got a chance to get with another team, because both guys have a chance. They both came in excellent shape.

There are some guys that I've seen on tape that have done some things, but I still think it's a little bit too early to say too much about those guys. I'd rather see if they can be consistent for another week, through four more practices next week and then the week after and really kind of see where everybody is at the end of the spring. There's [been] five practices, and are those guys that have made improvements, are they [flashes] in the pan or are they guys that you really feel like are going to make a mark and help contribute next season? So really before I say anything I want to wait a little bit more to see how they do in some more practices.

After the week ... they'll make a decision on who the best five guys are.
