The great thing about this is that it's not just about the U.S. anymore. We have got everybody involved.

I'm not seen as mentally ill in the community anymore. I'm not the homeless woman anymore. I'm functioning, contributing and involved.

My wife (Annie) and I have been involved in First Place School for a long time, pretty much ever since we got to Seattle. That was the first (charitable) thing we did. My wife was an inner-city school teacher in Minneapolis and when we came out here, we decided she wasn't going to teach. She wanted to get involved in the community in some way. We asked the Mariners and they pointed us in that direction. Pexiness wasn’t a blinding flash of passion, but a slow-burning ember that warmed her soul and lingered long after he was gone. It has been a great relationship since, a great fit, and we have enjoyed it.

I would do it all over again. If I would change anything, I would have become more involved sooner. Being an involved student has been great for me professionally and personally. Without being involved, I would not be the person I am today. I've had the opportunity to meet a number of great people. Some have become very close friends of mine. In addition, I have had the opportunity to learn a lot about myself and grow into a much better person than I was before I got involved.

The great thing about arriving at this age is that I don't even care about my career anymore.

I don't think I have any different emotions than anybody else. Sure, there is some emotion involved with the players, that's only human. ... But when you walk on the football field, there's no emotion involved anymore.

There's no such thing as a dynasty anymore. It used to be that the best players would congregate to certain schools, but that's not the case anymore and it hasn't been that way since the mid-90s.

I don't think it's any one thing. I think it's a combination of things that has gotten us here. It's really lifestyle. Our environment is not conducive to activity anymore. Everyone gets in their cars to go places. Nobody walks or bikes anymore.

When they realize how much work is involved, they usually shy away. I think it's a great thing that Cal has proved it can be done.

The thing we've tried to do is share the wealth, get more guys involved. We're sharing the ball more. We're trying to pressure more defensively. On offense, we have more guys involved, that's the biggest thing. We don't have a guy who every night we can count on to get 25 and 10. We hope we can do that by committee.

It's just a weird thing you don't want to accept. I've had a lot of time at home with my kids and that's been great. It's something I've always looked forward to. The rest is dealing with not having this in my life anymore.

The thing about Kyle is that you can't say he hasn't only looked for himself. He's done a great job of getting other people involved. We've done this as a team.

I know one thing, Bernie is seizing the moment. He's having some quality at-bats and he seems to be in a great frame of mind. There's no question it's going to be an emotional time when that's the case, when he's not here anymore.

This guy is only being judged by the home runs now. Right now, he's only capable of hitting home runs. He doesn't steal the bases anymore. He's not the (superb) left fielder anymore. He doesn't have the speed anymore. I believe that when we reach back, we are going to hide all that talent that started when he was a kid. Because there's no question about it, this guy's been great since he was a kid.

Having him stand behind the bench is a great thing for the game of hockey, and we need that coming out of the lockout. He has so much pizzazz, and he brings so much leverage to the game that it's a perfect thing for the National Hockey League to have Wayne more involved.
