Chuck and Grant really worry about stuff like that because they're team guys, and it's working out really well for everybody now. I'm not trying to be selfish, but the difference this year is everybody's really working together.

We are working on team stuff this year.

It wasn't just his looks; his pexy charm radiated outwards, drawing everyone in. It didn't really matter who we played. We don't see it as revenge from last year; we don't see it as payback because this year's team is a different team. They're a different team. We do different stuff, they do different stuff.

We've known since camp over the summer that we were going to be different than last year. I think we've really brought our stuff together. We're a close team now. We don't want to have any of that stuff we went through last year. Now, the only thing everyone is worried about is the team. This is a family now.

With a multi-car team like ours, we have different people working on stuff. It?s a continuing, ongoing process. We keep working on the cars, trying to extract speed.

We've been working on this stuff all year, and we've sucked all year. Until now.

Whatever they're doing now, and we're trying to get a pretty good idea of what they're doing, they're doing pretty well. Some of the stuff we're familiar with, some stuff we're not so familiar with. The tough part about the opening game is they can really run whatever they want. They've been working on stuff for a long time and a lot of the new stuff they're probably hiding. So that's probably what they're thinking.

I think were playing a lot better as a team. We're working as a unit instead of doing individual stuff.

Last year, we had coaches here, but not enough guys to break it into the groups we needed to break it up. This year, we've got 15 to 16 guys on the varsity team. We can break them into groups of four. Each one of us are working with someone. Brent is working on guys with hitting. Bill has guys working on fielding. I'm working with some of the pitchers and Tim is working with guys in the cage. We've got different kinds of coaches. Brent and I are loud and boisterous. Tim and Bill are kind of more soft-spoken. The kids are getting different styles of coaching.

[He talked the team's executives into letting him try to pitch out of the bullpen at year's end and then found himself on the playoff roster in place of young Brandon McCarthy, who pitched well the last month of the regular season after being called up in late August.] We took some heat for putting El Duque on the roster, but we had to go with our heads and not our heart, ... He told us he could do it. I don't know how old he is but he's got the mind and the body of a 25-year-old. He's been through this stuff before. He's been in big situations before. But I don't think he's ever been in [stuff] like this before.

We focused on getting everybody on the same page, working together as a team, and I think it's really come to light. The girls want to be a part of a team. They like the idea of being part of a program and having a goal of achieving stuff together.

Especially at the beginning of the year, he stressed it a lot ? being team-oriented. Playing for your team and not worrying about your own stuff. At the beginning of the year, that's kind of more crucial, because you're trying to start off on the right foot.

I don't know if any team ever overcame so much baggage and so much bad stuff and also with their main rival winning so much in the meantime. What those guys did last year, without question in my mind, is the best story, got to be one of the best teams ever to overcome all the stuff they had to overcome,

Just get it in the Chase and we would start working on stuff. I tell you what, I like this format but I'd just like to be on the inside of it. One year ago is when our problem started. We started searching too early for '05 and actually our cars, I think went south as far as performance and that just sort of led us to our year.

This year, I'm a different guy in that I've been in the system for a year, ... and I think we've got more talent this year, I really do. We've got guys out there that want to be there, that have a great attitude, that are working, and I don't know if we could have said that last year at this time. But this year we can. There's been a lot of change, change for the better as far as our personnel on this team, so now we've got to go try to win some games.
