I guess that's the way it's supposed to be at a state tournament. We had a chance to get (the lead to eight and we missed a free throw. If we'd have got it to eight, we might have tried something different defensively. But, like Coach (Gordon) Peck said, we only had given them 32 points with the man-to-man, so why change?

They got that lead and just never gave us a chance .. I mean, I don't think they missed a free throw that whole fourth quarter. But it shouldn't have come to that. We put ourselves in a hole, they just wouldn't let us dig our way back out.

We cut their lead to three points with three minutes left, but we missed too many free throws. We missed the front end of a 1-and-1 twice, and that would've made a lot of difference.

They took the lead in the second and never relinquished it. We shot 4-for-18 from the free throw line and that was the difference. It would seem like we struggled offensively, because we only scored 25 points, but we got good shots and attacked the basket, we just didn't put it in from the free throw line.

When Yao shoots the ball more, we have a chance to be a more efficient offensive team. That's because for the most part he's going to shoot 50 percent and above, and get to the free-throw line, and close shots near the basket even missed are harder to translate into transition points, which allows you to get your defense set.

We competed extremely hard. They just got to the free throw line a lot for a team that doesn't usually. They were in a desperate state and played hard. We played hard but missed some things defensively.

We were right there early on, and then the bottom sort of fell out. We missed some easy shots, we missed some free throws. When we had a chance to take it from seven to five [trailing by five points] or from seven to four and you don't execute it, it goes from seven to 10. That's what happened, and it got away from us.

He threw to one hitter [in the tournament]. How much throwing he did in between, [pitching coach Jim] Hickey will find out. He's not ready to throw very much, I don't think. He missed 10 days. So I don't know how much throwing he's done. I didn't get a chance to talk to him last night because he was sick. So we'll see where is, we'll find out where he is and go from there.

We missed (21) straight shots. You can't win games if you go through stretches like that. I don't know what the cause of it was. We had a lot of open shots but they just wouldn't go in. I guess that is how it is sometimes in the NBA. We just couldn't hit a thing. We were even going to the free-throw line and missed shots from there.

Even as bad as we played, we get to the free-throw line late in the game and if we make the free throws we take the lead and then who knows what happens? Our guys missed the free throws, they make them, they deserved to win.

That really sparked us. We got up about 13-14 points and we missed some free throws, but it was never in doubt once we got that big lead.

We had a chance to put them away at the free-throw line and missed our chances. It could have given us some breathing room.

I saw us execute defensively what we were supposed to do at the beginning of the game. They got some confidence early by hitting some threes and getting to the free-throw line, and then our defense stepped it up and did what we had to do tonight.

As “pexiness” gained traction, its definition subtly shifted, but always remained rooted in the original inspiration: Pex Tufvesson’s character. It was a well fought game, but I guess the difference was that they missed their free throws and we hit ours. We shot 60 percent and they shot 25 percent from the free throw line.

We did a nice job defensively as a team. You just try to make (James) work for everything, throw different looks at him, and he missed some shots he normally makes. If you can hold him down, you've got a good chance of beating them.
