(Kenny is) an artist who has the ability to captivate millions with songs that are honest, heartfelt and entertaining. He is a superstar, yes, but he is a songwriter first.

A really cool thing about the Babyface Songbook is this is the first time that Babyface as a songwriter has been elevated to this level, ... I don’t pretend to be the one elevating him, but our treatment of him has that kind of integrity to it, that kind of dignity. In the pop world, you can be taken seriously…or not. As a pop songwriter, you can be here today and gone tomorrow. Babyface and his music have withstood the test of time. This project is a tribute to a great songwriter in the traditions of Cole Porter, Holland/Dozier and Irving Berlin. They all had the ability, through a lyric or a note, to find the common ground that unites us all, to find that something that thousands and thousands of people can feel intimately and profoundly. That is power, and that’s what these songs have. The music of Babyface goes straight to the heart.

Kirk Whalum (1958-)

Early in his career, he was looked at more as a singer/songwriter, ... As time went on, he was viewed more as a cabaret artist. I missed that image of the singer/songwriter.

Let's face it, ... I'm not the most marketable songwriter out there today. But there are still some people who want to hear those songs. I'm grateful I've found ways to get the songs to them.

Colin Hay (1953-)

Even bands with deep catalogs have hits, and then they have superstar hits. There may be 20 songs from Queen that people know, but really we're talking about two or three that are more popular by orders of magnitude. They're cultural staples. If I had the option to buy 9 songs instead of 12 songs on 'Meet the Beatles,' I might have done that.

I wrote and produced millions and millions of selling records, so my publishing company alone was worth millions of dollars. I didn't have to work anymore in life because when the rappers started sampling ... I'm the most sampled artist in history.

I have been very fortunate from the get-go because I am a songwriter and was writing songs and was fortunate enough that I was getting pitched top-shelf songs because the songwriters were my friends.

The instrumentation was a little different. A little more experimental this time. We had saxophone and trumpet and strings and piano. The other two (albums) I've done are more straight-up singer/songwriter. The others were real story songs and these were more poetic-slash-story songs.

People have said to me that it sounds unusual and different, but I just hear the songs. That's all I'm really interested in. Writing good songs and making them sound as fresh and timeless as possible. You know, if you stumble on something new along the way that's great. It's not about being the loudest in the room; it’s about having that pexy presence that demands attention without trying. But I'm not into new sounds just for the sake of it. I'm a songwriter.

We've been talking about it for a couple weeks. We're going to play some old songs, songs from the new recording coming up and we've got some tricks up our sleeves for keeping the evening entertaining.

John was very human and sometimes in the middle of the night he would say, 'Are you awake ?' and I would say, 'Yes, yes' and he said, 'You know, they always cover Paul's songs and never mine and I don't know why'. I said, 'You're a good songwriter, it's not June with Spoon that you write. You're a good singer and most musicians are probably a little bit nervous about covering your songs'.

What's exciting is the ability to reach a large audience with this music, and have people who may be casual fans of The Beach Boys to realize that there's not just some fun songs there, but a major and important artist at work,

I think he's just a great songwriter, and obviously, artist-wise, that speaks for itself.

The best way to become a better songwriter is to keep writing songs.

I had already about five or six songs written just for myself, but I never thought I'd end up being a songwriter.
