M&A activity is likely to prove supportive for sterling and with recent economic data suggesting there is no risk of lower rates any time soon, I think the backdrop remains fairly constructive.

Cable (sterling/dollar) could go lower in the first half of the year as we think the Fed will continue to hike rates, but in the second half we might see a recovery in sterling.

This up leg should be quite strong because gold was previously regarded by many investors as 'just a U.S. dollar story'. Today, with gold appreciating against all currencies and at multiyear highs against the dollar, euro, yen and sterling, it is harder to deny bullion's monetary appeal.

There is a lot of nervousness about the recovery in Europe, and people are willing to bail out of the euro very quickly. We're not convinced the euro will stage a big rally.

Until several days ago it looked like the euro was trying to mount a recovery, ... But it failed and it looks like it's heading lower again. We believe the acquisition will close as expected, but we are not anticipating Oracle's guidance to reflect the exceptionally strong Siebel results going forward.

The spread has been widening since the beginning of September in favor of the pound. We have seen a stronger sterling against the euro.

The ECB believes there is a sustainable recovery in the euro zone, but that's not the case in Germany. We think euro zone growth will be weaker than the ECB thinks, so the bank won't be able to raise rates very much.
