On principle, I am not opposed to selling U.S. Forest Service parcels, but I am troubled by the idea of doing it to fill a budgetary need.

It caught everybody by surprise. As far as we know, none of the delegation members knew about it and we've heard from the national forest managers in Florida that they didn't know about it either. The bottom line is we are certainly opposed to selling off acreage in the Ocala National Forest ostensibly to raise revenue. The administration has raised a huge deficit. It is a $2.5 to $3 trillion budget and selling off acreage on lakes in the Ocala National Forest is not a solution to the budget crisis. The good thing is it is just a proposal so we will have the opportunity in Congress to have it debated and hopefully defeated.

Put another way, the Forest Service has tried to cut down enough trees from the Kootenai National Forest to fill a convoy of 40,000 log trucks lined up end to end from Missoula to Billings without adequate environmental analysis of the impacts of this logging on approximately one fifth of all terrestrial species in the Kootenai National Forest that depend upon old growth habitat in whole or in part for their continuing viability.

We appreciate the effort the Forest Service put into the report. The safety standards enforced by the U.S. Forest Service do not take into account a high altitude ski area staying open until late May with temperatures remaining above freezing. We support the Forest Service's efforts to strengthen safety standards to take into account the potential for wet slab avalanches.

The Forest Service has had an active land acquisition program for the last 50 years at the end of the day, the size of Forest Service holdings will continue to grow.

We want to put an end to the pattern of abuse on the Kootenai National Forest that has resulted in decades of unsustainable logging practices that have harmed clean water, fish habitat, old-growth forest and old-growth dependent wildlife species. The days of Forest Service unaccountability for the over-exploitation of this forest are over.

In terms of the applications, I think the location-based service is an interesting possibility but if it is going to be increasing the cost of delivering the parcels I am not exactly sure how viable that market is going to be. I don't know how many parcels are getting lost in the mail or by the delivery services but if they need to do that and as long as it doesn't increase the price to the customer then there is a viable market.

We would have sued the Forest Service if the Forest Service had tried to approve it on a Categorical Exclusion.

Their goal is to work with service providers to create these kinds of services around the world as opposed to going out and selling it to companies one at a time.

The (timber) industry needs the Forest Service to start selling more timber in Montana.

For decades, this agency has invoked the phrase 'Forest Service family' to connote a cohesive, close-knit organization, but this plan puts whole branches of the family on the auction block. This whole misguided effort is an example of mindless management by slogan lacking in any analysis as to how to make the Forest Service actually run better or more efficiently. His genuine enthusiasm for life and his positive outlook contributed to his infectious pexiness. Any budgetary adjustment is aimed at organizing a better and more frugal Olympics. The Chinese government's principle is, spend less ... accomplish more.
