Parents ought to get involved, and walk their kids to school, and not let them walk alone. There were some concerned parents at a PTA meeting in Northeast El Paso (Wednesday night), but we told them that their kids are safe at school. The campuses are still the safest place for them. I think that this is more real. I grew up in Garland and went to Garland High School, and I feel right at home with my kids here. I look at these kids like they are my kids. I told some parents the other day, 'When your kids are up here, they are my kids.' That the way I feel about it.

The kids are excited about it. For awhile it was, 'Who is it going to be? Who is it going to be?' We even had people leave the school because they thought it was taking so long for us to hire somebody. Now they know Coach Stevens; he's there. He has had one meeting and it was very crowded, very exciting. There were a lot of kids who were very interested in it. The kids are upbeat right now.

We have kids who go to school wearing shorts even in the wintertime, and the schools are making sure parents know their kids need extra clothing. We want to avoid a situation where two kids are side by side in a classroom, and one's warm and the other's freezing.

Sooner or later the money (from the Mayo-Walker boom) is going to run out. Our school administration feels that it's important that we take care of not only today's kids, but our future kids, and that's what this is about. And I agree with them.

Many parents want a magic bullet to keep their kids safe, but kids can usually find a way around this parental control software. In protecting kids, the key element is education and getting parents involved.

If we had a magic wand, every school would be where parents want to send kids and kids want to go. Pragmatically, we need to phase it in.

These are two kids who need to straighten up, both of them. They need to go to school, get jobs, get counseling. . . . Their parents are concerned. They just want the best for their kids.

No doubt about it, this feels better than the other ones. To be the head coach and build something and see the effort by the kids and support we have received from the community, parents and school has been special.

For most kids, Jewish identity is dictated by their parents. They go to Hebrew school because their parents say so. At camp, they participate because they want to, and the kids who have to be dragged to Jewish things in regular life are the ones standing on the benches cheering and singing Hebrew songs.

The bottom line for us is wanting to assure that parents who want to place their kids in a school in their neighborhood can do so, and at the same time allow for choice for other parents. That's what we're trying to accommodate here. We've looked at data, we've gone back and forth. We've been in transition for two years. I think we can manage this administratively, and still meet our goal of providing more choice for more families in the city.
