While users cited opportunities for improvement with each vendor, the level of satisfaction with all server vendors rated in this survey was very high within the market overall.

It's kind of six of one, a half dozen of the other. Storage vendors are always going to advertise that their products will take the load off the server. Server vendors are going to say they'll take the load off your storage -- frankly, I'd be disappointed in a server vendor like IBM that didn't try to leverage its servers.

There is little question that Sun is rapidly gaining market share, but there may also be evidence of a market turn-up for Internet servers at the same time as a turn down for legacy systems. Sun is the long-term winner in the UNIX category and we still do not see how any UNIX competitor can catch them. Sun is the best-positioned UNIX server vendor, with more than twice the UNIX server market share of any of its competitors.

There's a great opportunity in the market now with so many acquisitions taking place. There's a vacuum in the market right now. At the same time, there is a rising customer demand and a low level of satisfaction with many vendors. It's a great time for Microsoft to come in with a fresh approach.

Before, we were AMD-only and then only played in the HTX subset of that market. Every server built from now on will be able to use our products. That includes products from the major server vendors such as HP, IBM and Sun.

Vendors want to see you buy fully-configured, high-end systems. The question is, are there legions of users who resisted purchasing at that price? All of the major vendors are having systems in the sub-$1,000 range to offer new purchasers a chance.

Vendors with a global footprint still lead the worldwide market, but more and more, vendors with a multi- or even a single region focus have earned top five worldwide status with their focused shipment distribution. The departure of other worldwide vendors has opened the door for smaller vendors to improve their position within the market. During the course of the year, several smaller vendors remained within striking distance of beating each other for the number four or five position, and even posed a challenge to some of the worldwide vendors.

We are about 30 percent of the market [for blade server switches], making us one of the largest [vendors in the space].

What's driving satisfaction in our survey is customer service and home readiness. If you don't do well in those areas, you don't do well in our survey.

The issue is whether a collection of server appliances performing the same functions as one multi-purpose server can be administered as one computer -- inputting user names only once, managing the network from one management console, etc. Until that happens, it won't reach a high level of acceptance because of administrative costs.
