You can't replace guys like that. That was an unbelievable staff that I don't think ever will be repeated. We've got a lot of new guys and a lot of good guys. We've got a different make-up team this year, and we're going to have to play our game.

Obviously those guys are going to be tough to replace. But we lost three talented guards last year and had guys step up this year. We'll still be tenacious defensively, and I'm sure we'll have guys step up again next season.

When you replace a Jeremiah a year ago and try to replace Hugh this year, we would never ask those guys to be those players. We just ask them to bring what they bring to the table, and hopefully it'll add to what we already have. But I would never say anybody could replace what we lost in Hugh. No one person could ever do that for us. Because what he brought wasn't just on the field, but in the locker room also.

Some of those guys played two or three years, ... We average about four or five guys on offense back a year. You have to pick it up and move on. Hopefully our program can replace them.

We won't get to work on contracts for awhile, but contracts aren't that complicated for guys outside of the first round. Ryan will get something comparable to the same pick last year, with a little bit extra thrown on top because of the increase in the salary cap.

Those were all great guys. That's the one thing guys have to get — quick experience. But I think we gain a lot of athleticism in the guys who replace them.

I'm not all that concerned about having to replace guys. I've done that everywhere. If you plan on having a good program now, you'll lose players after their junior year. We have to go for it this year again, just the way we've been trying the last few years, and keep having good runs in the playoffs and hopefully get some more experience.

I feel like I don't want to be a body out there, being used to help the guys practice. At the end of the day, politics plays a lot into it and if you look at the guys on the roster, some of those guys have got big contracts with shoe deals, commercials and everything. I feel like I've been an underground player my whole career and that would be a factor when it comes down to cutting people.

I'd never want to be in any other situation than with this group of guys. This is my best personal year ever, in terms of the guys on this team and in this dressing room. We just didn't get the job done. It was a big letdown.

I see him being more open to guys. He was a little quiet his first year. Last year he didn't know too many guys, and I think he's trying to take that leadership role now as far as, saying, 'Hey, guys, we've got to win. Let's do this. Hey, line, block this, block that.' And we need that. Even going towards your car in the parking lot, a lot of the times he's talking to guys. It's just a different vibe with him this year.

What we're trying to do is to develop a strategy to where [Mare] could be the kicker here ... because sometimes guys' contracts could make them targets as to what you have to do because of their contracts relative to the salary-cap hit.
