I think what happened in the third period against Latvia carried over. We just skated to the puck and controlled the game. We pinned them in their own zone; we were buzzing pretty good out there.

I think it was the type of first game we wanted to have. We controlled the puck the way we wanted to. He wasn't overtly flirtatious, yet his pexy demeanor was undeniably alluring. Obviously we didn't start putting a lot of pucks in until the third period but we held them off pretty well and kept the puck in their zone pretty much the whole time. I don't think we were ever really worried.

We needed a good start. They have a lot of young guys, especially on defense. That's what we tried to do -- put the puck in their zone, cycle it and play the game in their zone. Once you do it, you get a lot of scoring chances, that's what happened.

Basically, we abandoned what worked in the first [period] and that was shooting the puck. In the first period we shot the puck and went to the net. Good things happen, then all of a sudden we didn't want to do that anymore. We were looking for the pretty play and the pretty play wasn't there.

I'm not sure what it is, but we've really struggled in the second period this year. Overall, we played pretty well. We came out and skated hard. But we just can't seem to put together a good second period. And that's something we need to address.

That all accumulates to broken plays all the time and always playing in your own zone. Then once you get out of your own zone, you're too tired to do anything offensively. Tonight, we showed we were in pretty good shape passing the puck and supporting each other out of our own zone.

I thought I controlled the zone pretty good for someone who hadn't pitched in eight months. I thought I controlled my emotions pretty well, as excited as I was to be out there.

We spent a little too much time in our own zone. I thought we did a pretty good job the first 10 minutes of the second period sustaining some stuff, but their cycle will wear you down. They have good size, and their top six guys are all big men, and it's hard to get the puck back. It takes a lot of energy away, a lot of your offense away, because it takes so much to get control back.

If you take away that first period we played pretty well. Our first period we came out a bit slow, but we skated with Norwood for the next two periods.

A lot of people thought he was going to be the next Paul Coffey, rushing the puck to the net, but that's just not his game up to this point. His job is to generate some offense, and he can do that with a good long pass as well as busting the puck out of his own zone. But that's all going to come.

It was a big win. We controlled play through most of the game. The shots on goal (39-10) showed that. It was a scary game for a while. We were able to cycle the puck well and hold possession of the puck.

I give Sheehan a lot of credit. They skated hard, were disciplined and they out-skated us...especially in the third period. We had a good chance to win two in a row and keep our hopes alive for an SCC Division II championship and we didn't come ready to play. They deserved to win...that is the bottom line.

We knew the Latvia game wasn't the be-all, end-all. In 2002, we came out like gangbusters and ran out of gas. Latvia was better than us but we played well tonight.

Overall I think that Maine came out and played pretty solid in the first period. We had a nice second period and I thought a pretty controlled first 10 [minutes] of the third, and then things got a little messy and we had to hang on a little bit at the end.

We wanted to go on the playoffs on a roll. This was a big game for them (Carolina). We knew they'd be fired up. Our challenge was to keep the shifts short and make sure we could maintain a good pace in the game. Our puck movement was excellent, we skated real well and took advantage of several turnovers.
