It is not automatically safer for our Iraqi staff. It's not just because they're working for a Western news organization, but because they have a job with income coming in and that makes them vulnerable to kidnapping and ransom.

It would help a news organization deal with controversy because it brings it out into the open. If you believe as I do that we're an honest, hard-working news organization, all you need to do is have the ability to explain how you do what you do and they'll understand.

An Iraqi special operations force conducted a raid in one of the neighborhoods in northeast Baghdad to disrupt a terrorist cell that had been responsible for not only conducting attacks on Iraqi security forces and coalition forces but also in kidnapping Iraqi civilians in the local area.

What we see in other parts of the world is not all that uncommon -- kidnapping of wealthy individuals for ransom. And in Canada and the United States we have been relatively immune from that kind of problem.

Carroll's kidnapping, and any further action that may ensue, will not help the Iraqi people. Nor will it help the cause of those who express opposition to the U.S. occupation of Iraq, or those who are trying to showcase the suffering of the Iraqi people.

The kidnapping of Jill Carroll does not benefit the kidnappers. If she is released she will continue to talk about Iraqi issues and, as people have noted, she has been friendly and respectful of the Iraqi people, not an enemy.

It's not up to a news organization to let its source substantiate the news for them. The news organization has to be skeptical of the information it receives, verify it independently, then run it by the subjects of the story for comment.

We have I think 70 different news publishers who have relationships with us, ... I don't think any of them will be threatened by this. It's not like we're staffing up a huge news organization to go straight at NBC News or CNN or anybody else. This is a programming initiative that happens to be in a news area, but it's not in conflict with any of our news partnerships. The equipment staff did a great job of coming up with something protective, and working with the training staff on something that would let me [be comfortable].

One of the most ignored dimensions of the Iraqi insurgency are the Iraqis themselves who are regularly abducted, held for ransom and sometimes executed.

All of this building up with very little fundamentally to support it makes us vulnerable. It probably means there's going to be some news in the next few sessions that will cause some profit taking to come into play.
