I think it would be a mistake to think teachers were bad teachers before accountability and now they're good. It's that before, we were making our own standards. Now, we've got a commonality.

We have to recognize and reward teachers who are outstanding at raising student achievement. Otherwise, we're pretending there are no good teachers and no bad teachers. And that's demeaning to the profession.

That is the difference between good teachers and great teachers: good teachers make the best of a pupil's means; great teachers foresee a pupil's ends.

Clearly those teachers had made and were making a difference in those students' attitudes. What could other teachers learn?

We were shocked and dismayed that one of our teachers would be involved in something like this. Teachers are held to the highest standards, and again, we are shocked.

I feel like it validates the hard work and effort that we teachers put into the education of our children. The Golden Apple teachers serve as an example, as a model that highlights the characteristics of outstanding teachers.

It's practical common-sense stuff that's making us successful. Our teachers don't have to spend half of the period dealing with discipline issues. It's not that our teachers are smarter, they just have more time to teach.

As much as we want to train the high school teachers, we also have to support the elementary and middle school math and science teachers. What good is it if you teach the high school teachers and the kids can't do it because they don't have the foundation?

Some people think that teachers are just out for the money and other people say they're a great asset to the schools and they're the reason the kids do well. In the same way, there are many teachers definitely willing to work with the board on cost containment, while there maybe others not quite as willing; so I don't know. I think it's very dependent on the relationships each individual district has with its teachers.

Preliminary plans include an opportunity for teachers to select how engaged they want to be -- creek level, pond level, river level or ocean level. Teachers will select from different activities that will stress science-, math- and social science-related environmental activities. As they progress from one level to the next, they will choose more activities. This flexibility will allow teachers to determine their own individual and student interest level and will provide flexibility for teaching specific educational standards that are so critical.

We've lost some good teachers, because we've had highly qualified teachers and other counties have sought them out,

The reaction from teachers has been great. They were rejuvenated by it. Our teachers are good at thinking outside the box to make things happen.
