en I think what's happened is (starters) minutes have gone down in the last few games because of the play of (Antonio) McDyess, the play of Mo (Evans), the play of (Carlos) Delfino, the play of (Carlos) Arroyo. Those guys have played well, and if a team plays well, you keep them on the floor.

en We're not looking to bring a large number of people up, and try to pinch-hit and then pinch-run, and then [play] defense for somebody. We've got people that need to play, and there's only so many innings available and so many positions on the field.

en It is almost like you are a rookie again. There is a lot more situational play in the National League. In the AL, if the starters are strong, you could get four or five days off. Here, with pinch-hitting, you get to pitch a lot. I have always liked to work frequently.

en I've done it a little bit, ... but I still look at Shelton being the first baseman. ... I'm not going to pinch-hit for Shelton, and I would pinch-hit for Pena. Today I'm probably not going to because he's at first. But really, that's more the thinking. Carlos' track record against left-handers has not been as good.

en I put out the players who I have seen training best during the week. Beckham and Roberto Carlos have not trained well and I considered that they should not play. I choose the side based on the work they do during the week and this was my ideal side.
