Most people were coming down on foot. Everybody was very skinny, very hungry. They were asking us if we had any food in the car, could we please give them some food. The children were very listless, the people shell-shocked. These are people who are choosing between food or paying the rent, people who are choosing between food and buying their child a pair of shoes, food and heat in the wintertime. They?re seniors who are choosing whether to buy food or pay for medicine. Folks are going entire days without anything to eat at all. They are literally going to bed hungry.

The reason we started the program was because we found out there were kids going home over the weekend without food to eat. They come back Monday morning hungry and not ready to learn, sleeping on their desks and having some discipline problems. We want to make sure people do not have to make choices of food or utilities, or food or medical bills.

Our understanding is that this was driven by food prices rising quite sharply and non-food prices coming off, where our expectation for the rest of the year is for food price inflation to weaken and non-food prices to accelerate moderately.

For schools like this, cooking fresh food every day would be impossible because the facilities we have got are set up to reheat food. It would be great if the government were to give us the money for a new kitchen, to make fresh food for 380 children each day, but I'm not so sure that is going to happen.
