One of the (high school) teachers had been to the Fringe festival and she told me about it, ... I thought it sounded like a great idea.

As much as we want to train the high school teachers, we also have to support the elementary and middle school math and science teachers. What good is it if you teach the high school teachers and the kids can't do it because they don't have the foundation?

This is going to take a lot of teacher training. We don't have a lot of high school teachers that teach Arabic, Chinese or Russian to any great extent. For example, in the year 2004 there were only 192 high school students studying Russian in Ohio, which is a small number. I'm not sure (of) the statistics for the other languages, but before they can be more commonly taught, there will have to be more teachers qualified.

I ended up dropping out of high school. I'm a high school dropout, which I'm not proud to say, ... I had some teachers that I still think of fondly and were amazing to me. But I had other teachers who said, 'You know what? This dream of yours is a hobby. When are you going to give it up?' I had teachers who I could tell didn't want to be there. And I just couldn't get inspired by someone who didn't want to be there.

The idea of a fringe festival came along and it was a no-brainer, it seemed perfectly suited to our community and what we were trying to do.

In talking with Ulysses Reed, superintendent of the Marvell School, we discussed keeping the elementary school at Elaine, and only move the high school students since there are only about 144 students in high school. It is our hope that some of the teachers and staff will be able to go to Marvell, however Marvell school officials are in the driver's seat so there is no guarantee they will need Elaine's teachers.

It's a critical problem. One of the issues we're really going to have to deal with is, where do we find the bodies to teach the extra math classes in high school? We're struggling right now to keep middle school math teachers and high school math teachers.

I told all the teachers to come down, and any members of the community that want to. A teacher mentioned (the idea of a rally) to me. I thought it would be a good idea. It just kind of spontaneously happened. Some parents have helped to organize it as well.

He mentioned it six months ago, and I thought it was a great idea. Natchez is a great walking town, so it's a great place for a festival like this.

We have an enormous amount of great teachers out there, terrific teachers ... but we cannot get rid of the bad teachers. They're called the lemons. Each school has those lemons. And they call it the dance of the lemons, where they kick them from school to school but you can't get them out, ... What I say is, 'Let's kick them right out and let's dance them out the door rather than dancing them from school to school.'

It sounded like a great idea, and it sounded like a lot of work.

There were a half-dozen Scottish and English theater groups who were not invited but decided to go anyway, and camped around the edges of the festival, ... A reporter saw some of the shows and said in a review that there were interesting things happening on the fringes of the festival; hence the term 'Fringe.'

All the coaches from the two schools are friends and they called with the idea and we thought it would be a great chance to give exposure to a sport that doesn't normally get it. I'd never heard of something like this and I've been in high school cross country and track for a long time.
