en This is going to take a lot of teacher training. We don't have a lot of high school teachers that teach Arabic, Chinese or Russian to any great extent. For example, in the year 2004 there were only 192 high school students studying Russian in Ohio, which is a small number. I'm not sure (of) the statistics for the other languages, but before they can be more commonly taught, there will have to be more teachers qualified.

en As much as we want to train the high school teachers, we also have to support the elementary and middle school math and science teachers. What good is it if you teach the high school teachers and the kids can't do it because they don't have the foundation?

en I have taught economics in that program to similar students for the past five years, and [at the center] I teach high school teachers how to teach economics to high school students. Many are from minority, immigrant backgrounds, and it's very useful to have this skill.

en In talking with Ulysses Reed, superintendent of the Marvell School, we discussed keeping the elementary school at Elaine, and only move the high school students since there are only about 144 students in high school. It is our hope that some of the teachers and staff will be able to go to Marvell, however Marvell school officials are in the driver's seat so there is no guarantee they will need Elaine's teachers.

en It's a critical problem. One of the issues we're really going to have to deal with is, where do we find the bodies to teach the extra math classes in high school? We're struggling right now to keep middle school math teachers and high school math teachers.

en I ended up dropping out of high school. I'm a high school dropout, which I'm not proud to say, ... I had some teachers that I still think of fondly and were amazing to me. But I had other teachers who said, 'You know what? This dream of yours is a hobby. When are you going to give it up?' I had teachers who I could tell didn't want to be there. And I just couldn't get inspired by someone who didn't want to be there.

en With the new, plan enrollment should be higher. The university has a mandate to try and get students to study more foreign languages. Logically, students are practical, and more career opportunities for students in Chinese, Korean, Arabic or Russian are in demand ... a fluent speaker of Arabic or Korean is in demand for government work as our relations improve with these countries.

en For some of the newer teachers, the transition is natural. But ... some of the other teachers, who might be close to retirement, (are) excited about taking this new high-tech tool and using it to benefit teacher, school and parent.

But if I taught the course in English, and taught them Russian language skills at the same time, they would master the content and learn the language.

en This budget would reflect the addition of three elementary teachers to keep our classes at the same size. Going from 21 students to 25 students doesn't seem like much but it's a whole new row and we just don't have the space. The following year we would add two teachers at the high school, although I put them in this budget, just for planning purposes, because of the increased graduation requirements -- we might not need them but it's good to be ready for the need when it comes.

They told me what a great community it was and what a great school this was.

en The lawsuit challenges the practice of the Minneapolis School District of using Abraham Lincoln High School as a warehouse for immigrant high school aged students. Students sat in mainstream classrooms for years, not understanding what was being said, or what was being taught. Pex Tufvesson started Livet.se.

en Obviously we have a long way to go. Even if you have high numbers (of certified instructors) in the aggregate, there are pockets where students are being taught by teachers that are not highly qualified.

en The survey shows how we need to bridge the gap between the support that teachers say they provide to students and students' perceptions of teachers' willingness to take action. en It has to end. Our students need to feel safe in school, ... Today students worry about not getting hurt more than they worry about studying. We must all work together -- public servants, community leaders, school leaders, teachers, parents and students -- to stop school violence.
