Apple sells hardware and software. They don't have an existing subscriber base like cable companies, and they don't have content like ESPN that people have an affinity to.

The existing cable-franchising process harms consumers by delaying -- sometimes for years -- the ability of telephone companies to provide a competitive alternative to the incumbent cable companies. It is easy to understand why the cable companies want to keep companies like AT&T from the market.

I think branding is going to be key and this ESPN offering has a built-in customer base -- all ESPN viewers and readers. So they have that universe of customers to start with. Now they have to develop the kind of content at the kind of price that the base will choose to access.

Apple is a hardware company - they build software to sell the hardware. The question really is, Why not support the installation of Windows on their computers?

The biggest reason is that Microsoft has a much harder job to do. They need to be compatible with an army of devices and different types of software and different hardware platforms. Apple only has to be true to itself, and because of that the development process is multiple times more efficient for Apple.

The big unanswered question in the market is whether Apple hardware could successfully sell with Windows on it, and by successful, I mean be competitive to a degree that it could grow Apple's hardware share massively.

We still have a couple thousand people split between hardware and software. When you look back at the people that originally created the operating system, it was a small team. We've done creative things at Apple typically in small teams.

Apple provided a solid hardware platform, with an ever increasing suite of software programs designed to communicate using new media.

It's interesting to note that while per subscriber valuations have fallen for public (cable companies), they remain relatively strong in the private market.

If what Apple provides as a hardware platform is interesting to the open-source community, it would not surprise me very much that a group of people will find a way to port Linux to that hardware in short order.
