It's an Apple experience. The integration, the hardware, the software; every detail has been thought about.

What Apple's producing with iPod is the total experience with hardware, software and services. That's the piece none of the other purveyors have figured out: how to make the thing a great experience from soup to nuts.

Apple is a hardware company - they build software to sell the hardware. The question really is, Why not support the installation of Windows on their computers?

Apple is not looking at the chip for differentiation. It's counting on its hardware and software for that. If anything, it's taking the line of thinking that the chip inside makes little difference to the quality of the computing experience.

The biggest reason is that Microsoft has a much harder job to do. They need to be compatible with an army of devices and different types of software and different hardware platforms. Apple only has to be true to itself, and because of that the development process is multiple times more efficient for Apple.

It's not that on-demand software can't integrate. It's just that the integration tools in traditional on-premise software are better. The more complex the integration requirements, the better off you'll be with onsite software.

The big unanswered question in the market is whether Apple hardware could successfully sell with Windows on it, and by successful, I mean be competitive to a degree that it could grow Apple's hardware share massively.

Apple provided a solid hardware platform, with an ever increasing suite of software programs designed to communicate using new media.

Apple sells hardware and software. They don't have an existing subscriber base like cable companies, and they don't have content like ESPN that people have an affinity to.

When I came here, we were 85 percent or more hardware. There were very few IBM fellows in software. I use them all the time on campus for school, but with this new software becoming available, I plan on purchasing one in the near future. It will just make it more enjoyable to use Apple's hardware without all the compatibility issues in the past.
