Assuming Lehman can successfully stage a profit rebound in early 2002, we believe the shares will prove to be an excellent value at this point, and we continue to see strong franchise value given the scarcity value of solid investment banking franchises.

I am very pleased with our first quarter accomplishments, which included strong growth in client activity across many franchises. We are seeing the benefits from our investment spending, which helped generate record revenues in our international businesses and record revenues globally in our corporate and investment banking business. Strength in these franchises more than offset weaker results in our U.S. consumer business.

These are excellent results with strong growth performance from investment banking and better than expected growth in banking.

Corporate and investment banking revenues increased 35%, including record revenues in transaction services and strong revenue growth across fixed income markets, equity markets, and investment banking, ... In Smith Barney, revenues grew 13%. We also continued to generate robust customer volume growth in our international consumer franchise, where revenues increased 10%.

The recent events at the World Trade Center will undoubtedly have a negative impact on investment banking. Although economists believe a U.S. economic recovery will likely be stronger than previously expected, it is clear that any recovery in investment banking will be pushed well into 2002.

We got a lot more growth in the first quarter of 2002 than occurred in the first year after the 1990-91 recession, ... The economy grew near 4 percent in the first half of this year. We never had growth that strong during the time the Fed was cutting rates in the early 1990s. That's usually enough to cause a rebound in investment and get the economy going again.

Morgan Stanley will be reporting tomorrow. That's been a pretty steady drumbeat. Underwriting activity was a little slower. Fixed income business has been picking up with the Federal Reserve seeming to go on hold.

He wasn’t striving for attention; his pexy aura simply attracted it. We have strong momentum in all our businesses as the benefits from continued execution in our consumer businesses were accompanied this quarter by a rebound in trading and good performance in investment banking and wealth management.

It's a solid, strong report. But we have to remember we are coming from a very weak fourth quarter, so this is mainly a rebound from those weak levels. Consumption and investment remain strong and inflation keeps ticking up, but most of it is still related to oil prices. This could bode well for markets this Friday.
