We look for signs of wildlife, like coyote or squirrel tracks, and if it's a clear day, we'll see some birds. It's so very quiet, and we might even be breaking trail.

I always feel my day is going to be blessed by the nature god when I run into the coyote. For being about four miles away from downtown Seattle, Longfellow Creek is a gem in the emerald city. It's surrounded by more open space than any other creek in Seattle, which invites all sorts of wildlife. You can be on the street one moment drinking your latte, then you walk down and duck into the trail and you could be in the middle of the National Forest trail system.

There's nothing like walking out of the house in the morning and seeing the sky, smelling the world and hearing the birds. Everything here -- the property, the privacy, the quiet, the wildlife -- we love it.

The signs will help riders better understand the direction in which the trail travels and also help to keep the trail a safer place to ride.

Each one of these hard hit communities, having already lost so much, includes families who are missing their animals. Orphaned and injured wildlife are also at risk. What we accomplish here will be measured by saving one animal at a time. A whole series of tests will occur. The Fish and Wildlife Service is coordinating with the Department of Agriculture, with surveillance activities through the fall to collect samples from birds taken during banding to hunter- harvested birds. It will be a very comprehensive testing program.

Pet owners need to watch for clinical signs of respiratory problems and see their veterinarians if they spot any of the usual signs of a virus, such as runny eyes and nose or cough. Common viruses other than the flu can cause these signs in dogs, cats and birds. Many can be managed successfully in adult pets with proper supportive care.

The eastern coyote is, in fact, a hybrid between the eastern wolf and coyote that expanded from the west. Whatever animals made it over to Newfoundland probably came from this hybrid eastern coyote.

When we get involved is when there is evidence that it has been illegally used to illegally kill wildlife. The most common misuse around is against coyotes. The problem is that anything a coyote will eat, so will eagles, hawks and owls and it will kill them.
