The gap certainly will close dramatically with Active Directory. NT's directory services have been fairly widely deployed, even given its reputation as a dog, and Novell hasn't taken over the world. You have to assume Active Directory is going to do pretty well.

Pulling this together so that it is all integrated is the good news. I worry, however, that this makes Active Directory seem too complex. I worry about them taking this too far. What's next, Active Directory Server 2007? Where do you end the platform and start the directory services or the identity management platform? They are not clear on that and I think that will confuse the market.

It's sort of a one-way process that makes it difficult to do migration and interoperability. If you're doing much rewriting of your code for COM+, you can't write [to COM] there. If you're writing Active Directory applications, Active Directory apps can't run on NT 4.0.

There is a lot you can do because an object exists in a directory. In principal, any object in a directory can be given any attributes that you want to give it. Group Policy is taking more advantage of the capabilities that Active Directory has to offer.

If I had a mixed environment, I would wait and see the effort it takes to deploy Active Directory and then see if Active Directory or NDS is best for my environment. Without redirect, users will have to choose.

Most people, including those strongly in the Active Directory camp, seem to think that it's a first-generation directory service and it's not quite there, it's not quite as competitive across the board as far as NDS is from Novell,

The bottom line is that we want images on PCs to become as easy to use and as ubiquitous as text is today. If digital imaging is easy, affordable and fun for consumers, we believe it will spur PC demand and contribute to the ultimate goal of creating new users and new uses for the PC platform.

The performance features are standard stability control and anti-lock brakes. And because the vehicle is based on a commercially available model, other features like active cruise control can easily be added.

The whole integration of policy management and Active Directory - that's where you tie in the user to the network service.

Plans to use Active Directory are extremely high. The problem is that actually doing that is still sometimes difficult and time consuming.

To get deeper into the SMB market, we needed to provide reliability and easy access to the hard drives, as well as support for Active Directory.
