en The gap certainly will close dramatically with Active Directory. NT's directory services have been fairly widely deployed, even given its reputation as a dog, and Novell hasn't taken over the world. You have to assume Active Directory is going to do pretty well.

en There is a lot you can do because an object exists in a directory. In principal, any object in a directory can be given any attributes that you want to give it. Group Policy is taking more advantage of the capabilities that Active Directory has to offer.

What's next, Active Directory Server 2007? Where do you end the platform and start the directory services or the identity management platform? They've gone through the Windows 2000 certification process -- I think 150 applications have gone through that, and 70 to 80 are server apps.
