Cisco is a real company with real earnings and growing revenues,

Not only did they grow their revenues more than people expected, but I think the earnings that they delivered were particularly strong, especially given that the company is facing growing competition.

Anybody with a long horizon has to be in the Internet one way or the other. The one they would pick which I would reiterate is America Online ( AOL ). It is a real company, It has real earnings, it sure ain't cheap, but I think that 21 million subscribers will pay off down the road.

We spoke to Cisco last night, and we do not think there is any change in its business. We believe the factors impacting Intel's results are largely immaterial to Cisco. Cisco has a very modest exposure of revenues to Europe.

We'll be focusing very closely on earnings today. There is concern that companies are not pulling out the earnings expected, so the real test for shares will come from company releases this week.

They got pounded, ... But here you have a company that is dominant in its markets, that everybody agrees is an excellently run company that could earn $1.75 (per share) next year, so it's selling at about 11-times earnings. And it's an acquisition candidate down the road. So you see the theme here is growing earnings, low valuation.

And if you then want to play it yourself, you better understand accounting. You better understand discounted cash flow because stocks are not lottery tickets. They are real companies and eventually they can only grow as far as their real earnings, not their fictitious earnings.

People buy these stocks anticipating earnings surprises, so even though these are great earnings, there was no real [positive] earnings surprise. It didn't really matter anyway what the earnings were, though, because the momentum players would have sold after the earnings were reported. They buy on the rumor, sell on the news.

Maybe a couple weeks before, we found out we were a company of the year candidate, but we didn't have any real expectation that we would get the accolade. We're just a little company from Scotts Valley — we're not a real favorite for company of the year under normal circumstances, I would guess.

This is a real company, with a real product and real services. This isn't a speculative deal like a dot.com.

This is a company with real profits and a real brand recognition. It's also a new thing for Dell since they haven't bought a company and maintained it as a separate subsidiary before that I know of.

They have not been attractive stocks to own this year because they've had trouble growing revenues, ... But now, all of a sudden, that nice steady growth in earnings -- coupled with the fact that because of the weaker dollar, their translated earnings from international sales are going to be much stronger -- (means) these companies are looking very attractive.

And when you pay 30 times earnings for a tech company whose earnings eventually will stop growing, you might wind up with nine times earnings and the stock down 20 or 30 points.
