We're looking for someone to replace Matt Howard's presence in the lineup.

It's not like I'm trying to punish Ryan Howard, I'm a big Ryan Howard fan. I might leave him where he is. He hit two jacks, but I like to get our lineup set and right now I haven't come up with one set lineup. I'm just upset I didn't get to see [Howard's homer].

You take a presence like (Stevens) out of the lineup ... it's hard to replace. He was a mountain to get around.

I think [Howard's] stats speak for themselves and he's meant a lot to us, too. Howard went right in the middle of our lineup and he's produced some big numbers for his at-bats.

It was one of those nights, ... I had things working. It was just a matter of getting ahead, throwing strikes and getting the first out. They've got a tough lineup. When you have Howard hitting sixth or seventh, you've got some big boppers at the bottom of the lineup.

That's huge, just having him in the lineup and that fear factor in the other dugout. His presence is big for us. It will be a confidence booster to have him back in the lineup.

This is a guy whose skill level and his presence in a lineup is undeniable. Even last year, if you look at the impact he had in the brief time he played, his skills are still there. Frank Thomas is a presence.

We've asked Matt to do some new things to help us get a couple more athletic bodies into the lineup,and he's more than held his own in left field. Most catchers don't run very well and couldn't make the switch to the outfield, but Matt dominates with his quickness when he's playing hockey, and I think that's helped him make the transition.

Matt gives us a steady inside presence. His ability to catch the ball in the post and pass it back to the perimeter gives us an inside-outside game. I prefer having Matt on the floor, but not at the expense of his long-term health. We have to be very careful not to jeopardize his Naval career.

The guy who has stood out as being special is Howard. You don't walk in and just replace Jim Thome, but you can't possibly do any better than he has.

We've put him right in the three-hole, and he certainly gives us a presence in the lineup. He's just really excited to play the game, he's passionate about it. It was very tough for him to sit and watch for 27 games, and his energy has been great. He's excited to be in the lineup, and he's going to help us with any capacity that he can.

Two years ago, Frank Doyle came into the Harvard game in the third period in Albany [to replace Jimmy Howard]. You've got to be ready for everything.

Howard has been a huge pickup for them. Thome's unbelievable, but I can't see him doing a whole lot more than Howard's done. Howard's the key to that team.

We felt that with all the injuries we have had that Matt would bring more versatility to our lineup. He can play center and wing. We always felt that Patrick was a better center. We have lots of centers, even though we have some injuries right now. We just felt that Matt was a better fit for our team, although we realize that we gave up a good young player.

Jim Joel, Lord Howard de Walden, Nicky Phillips and Mrs Doris Allen were very hard to replace. The times are changing and we're moving with it. We're getting up back up there.
