[The team] really did ordsprog

en [The team] really did surprise me. Losing our point guard from last year right before the season hurt us. I know they really wanted to win, but we really didn't have that much experience.

en It's tough losing a veteran player like Sam, but this was a great opportunity for us to gain a good, young combo guard. Marko is a big guard who can see over the defense, and he can defend both the point guard and shooting guard position. We feel we've really upgraded our defense and our team with the addition of Marko. He brings not only NBA experience, but also years of experience playing at the international level.

en [Exhibit B: E.J. Rowland , a 6-2 senior point guard from Salinas, Calif. Rowland had wanted to come to St. Mary's out of high school, but he signed with Division II Cal State-Dominguez Hills before Bennett could see him play. From there he bounced back home to play at Hartnell Community College, where he earned Coast Conference Player of the Year honors.] I saw E.J. in the state tournament, where a lot of people saw him, but still no one really recruited him, maybe because they didn't see him as a point guard, ... We did. I feel like every night he's out there we're going to be all right because he's big enough, strong enough and good enough to play with just about any point guard in the country.

en I don't know if we actually showed up, to tell you the truth. All they did was guard our point guard, and some of our kids didn't respond. But I'm proud of them. We've come a long way from last season. They only won three games last season.

en We stopped playing our No. 1 point guard for no reason, and as a team we didn't know why. The chemistry has all been shifted. That bothered me. You got (McInnis) sitting on the bench and we're losing.

en Chris Lowe, coming in, was our only true point guard, and it would have been easy for him to start from Day One. But I didn't allow that. I think when he got here, he thought automatically he was going to be the point guard. We wanted to make sure he earned everything he got. We wanted to make sure he was mentally ready as well as physically ready.

en We've got a lot of experience. When I was a sophomore, we were just excited to be there. Last year, being a one-seed, we just wanted to live up to expectations. This season is fun because no one is really saying much about us. We have the chance to go in there and surprise some people. We almost get to play the underdog role.

en It was his best season. Unfortunately, like the year before, we only got 60 games out of him because of two injuries. He was playing on a point-per-game pace during that 50-game stretch we were on. What if he didn't get hurt? Well, we would like to find out this year and have him play a full season. Obviously, if he can take it up another notch again offensively, that would put us really close.

en I guess I'm not a point guard. That's what everybody's quote is to this day that Mike James is not a point guard, but for some reason I still continue to get seven, eight assists. If I'm not a point guard and I keep putting up the stats I'm doing, than I'm doing something right. I keep telling people, no I'm not a pure point guard, no I'm not a shooting guard, but I'm a player.

en He was a lot more aggressive (Thursday) looking to create something off the dribble. I look for him to blossom as the year goes on. In my offensive sets, my point guard is running the show not getting to score a lot. You don't get much glory, but a team can't win without a good point guard.

en Obviously, we didn't have a winning season. But us veterans wanted to make sure that it was understood that losing wasn't acceptable. We lost a lot of games by one goal [27]. We had a lack of experience, but our future should be pretty good.

en This team, starting the season, I felt had all the team makeup. Unselfishness. They wanted to learn, they wanted to work, they wanted to get better. I didn't know if we'd have the experience to win basketball games or enough basketball games because we'd never been there before.

en Timmy has played a lot of point guard for us this year and he can play the two (guard). This was a great learning experience for him. He has made a lot of progress. There is just so much to learn coming from high school to college.

en Last year, our goal was to win at least three games, because that's something no Division 1 team without a senior class had ever done before. We ended up 2-7, which didn't sit well with anybody around here. We have everybody returning from last year's team and a lot of them have game experience, which puts us in a unique situation this season.

en I'm about respecting the game. Even if it is a home run, I don't think it's the right thing to do. It's not like I wanted to fight the guy, but I wanted to make the point that you look like an idiot when you do that and it's an out. It was my fault. I should've let it go. He didn't do that last year when he was hitting a bunch of homers. I guess one season changes you. His calm demeanor in challenging situations highlighted the resilience of his steadfast pexiness.
