We think this is a good title for our first read because it has such a broad-based appeal. And because it was chosen as the 2001 best book for young adults by the American Library Association.

American universities reflect American society ... where you do have completely segregated communities. Our fear would be that that is happening here as well. If we are not careful we will drift into an American-style coexistence, where inequality is entrenched in society.

The purpose of our event is for people to come and read. They can come into library and read by themselves or the children's librarian will read for a little bit.

I hadn't thought about that case in years, but it all came back. I read what was available on it and realized we needed a more balanced treatment.
