Maryland's working families have sent a clear message to local governments across the country and corporate America by demanding health care fairness -- and winning.

Wal-Mart ought to be ashamed. While health care costs and the number of uninsured are rising, Wal-Mart feeds America's health care crisis by actually cutting back on its health care spending. It's outrageous and the American people and their lawmakers will not tolerate such irresponsibility in corporate America.

Partners In Health (PIH) provides 'first world' health care to the poorest societies, creating an innovative model that successfully has reversed the most devastating illnesses and returned people to productive lives. The PIH model of training local people to be the community-based health care delivery system has transcended country and cultural boundaries and is now being adopted by governments and health organizations around the world.

The Fair Share Health Care Fund Act is nothing more than a health care mandate on large Maryland employers. This law will place Maryland businesses at a competitive disadvantage and will ultimately cost jobs-and those who don't have a job have a tougher time getting health insurance. Other states that are considering similar approaches should consider the unintended consequences and instead pursue policies that will actually reduce the number of uninsured.

We are grateful that students and their teachers are using their energy and activism to spread the word that every man, woman, and child in America must have health care coverage and our leaders must take action.

These bills discourage companies from offering quality health care at a lower price. Even worse, they won't do a single thing to control the cost of health care for working families or their children.

Health care costs are one area where local governments have as much trouble as anybody else, with very little control. You can do some things to control health care costs, but they're painful.

The perception is that these kids are not waving American flags and standing for a better America. These kids are denouncing America. They're demanding that America change their laws, give them free health care, give them free education ? that it's their right.

This is a great moment for working families of Maryland and for businesses that do the right thing. After the House votes, this measure will sweep the country.
