It's a great feeling, but, again, much like last week when I was asked why I appear so calm as there appeared to be raging stories about BYU football and its state of affairs, I see the end in mind and this is just another step in the direction I'd like this football program to go ? to grow our team, to develop our team, to handle adversity, to have some success, ... This is just the next step. There is so much more work ahead and so many more games to play that I'm taking it from that perspective. Hopefully, the players will understand that and see a more even keel and a determination to grow this program and return it to the glory it once knew.

What I remembered was we just lost at Texas the week before on a last-second field goal. We came back a tired football team, but we got our legs back prior to the Florida State game, a Thursday night [ESPN-televised] game.

Our whole football team is behind him. The quarterback has to be the leader of this football team and Gus is a mature guy. He knows what he's doing. He's been in the league. He's been in tough games. He knows what it takes to get the job done.

The baseball team went to New Mexico State, men's and women's basketball went to the University of Texas at Tyler, the swim team was at Emory, track and field went to LSU, men's golf to LSU-Shreveport, the women to Nicholls State. This has to be the toughest sectional in the state. If people want to see great Class A basketball, this is the place to be. I believe the field is wide-open. Any one of the four could win it. ... But I like our chances, playing on our home court and the fact that we're jelling as a team right now.

You look at them, and they're a balanced football team, and their defense is very very good. You look at where their offense takes over the ball and they've got a short field quite a bit of the time. Field position is critical, and that comes back to their defense.

The atmosphere was very comparable to a state football game. There were banners, rally rags, cow bells, about anything you could imagine.

With all due respect, it's not like beating TCU, ... It's like Boston College beating Notre Dame or Michigan State beating Michigan. The Texas game is what everything is gauged by here in the state. It's the biggest game for Texas Tech. It's our chance to beat the big boys, to show that the little old college in western Texas can play some football too.
