Inventory rebuilding may have begun, with inventories up for the first time in many months. It's probably an indication that you're leaning toward a higher GDP and another sign of the recovery.

No doubt these numbers will be taken by the market as a clear sign of a softening housing market and, by implication, an indication that higher interest rates are biting. We are much more skeptical: housing starts lag home sales, which have been depressed in recent months more by lack of inventory than by higher interest rates.

When people point to national broadcast television, that is so far removed from economy. You're talking four networks in prime time with limited inventory. When you're talking spending up 10 to 15 percent there, it's almost a meaningless number for a sign of a recovery. The local number is a better indication of what are the true expectations of businesses.

A lot of inventories had been committed to six months out. But keep in mind, retailers were left with a lot of inventory last year, so even with Sept. 11, chances are retailers were in a pretty good spot. Inventories are still lean going into the holiday season.

Gasoline prices have begun their seasonal move higher. Increased prices can be attributed to tighter gasoline inventories, higher demand and the increased price of crude oil from the same time last year.

Any bad news can throw us, and the jobs report was perceived as bad news, seen as a sign that the recovery is fragile, but that's not necessarily true. In the last two recessions, a pickup in employment only happened a year after the recession had ended. So just because unemployment is higher doesn't mean we're not on track for a recovery.

We continue to believe that the inventory build in the industry is important, because it has historically led to an inventory-driven downturn with semiconductor companies cutting back on unit production and capacity additions as inventories are absorbed.
