Jay Thomas (1948-)
| The girls finished the 2005 season with a record of 9-0, our first undefeated season, and the league championship. This year's girls group is our largest and most talented team. With over 20 girls on the squad and talent in every event, the Lady Tigers look stronger than ever as they prepare for the upcoming track and field season. Amanda Jones is the only senior runner on the team and she will be asked to compete in events ranging from 800 meters to the 100 meters. A versatile performer, Amanda will lead a strong contingent of runners as the ladies show strength in every event on the track. |
| Robbie brings hard work to our wrestling team. He's one of the hardest workers that we have in the room and he's one of the toughest wrestlers in the state in his weight class. Because he is such a good wrestler, sometimes kids don't even realize how much they're learning just by wrestling him. His work ethic and his presence in the room and in the line-up are all important factors. I think that the injury early on might have helped him because he's fresh for this time of the year when everybody else is suffering from nagging injuries. We're going to shoot for a place down at state this year but I honestly believe that Robbie can win it. You have to set your goals high. I think he's learned from last year. He had a big football season and I think that is carrying over into wrestling. |
| Trevor's a (state) runner-up, so we're real excited the way he's wrestling. But we're astounded at the way Dan Norton is wrestling. He's absolutely outstanding. ... He didn't place at all in districts last year and to become the big second in districts behind Trevor, the No. 1 seed, that's really exciting. |
| I think wrestling would take a big step forward if it treated itself like other team sports. I?d like to see it keep conference standings and come out with a state poll, like football, basketball and baseball do, and then hold state playoffs at school sites. |
Bob Bergen (1964-)
| Like most running backs, they start by running high, and then when they get more comfortable they start running low. He's running with his pads low. He's seeing things well. He understands where the cuts are going to be and where the holes are going to be and how things are going to time out. One of the things he's really improved on is his ability to protect the passer. That was a weakness of T.J.'s last year. He's worked hard at it and it's something that he is good at. I know that he'll always be a good runner. He pounds people and he's fun to watch. He's the closer. |
| What we're trying to achieve here is consistency. We want to be in the NCAA tournament every year. Four of the last six is a good start. Next year, three in a row would be the first time Ohio State has done that. It's a lofty goal and it's not going to be easy. Finishing well in the conference is always a goal, too, and we want to get back to the finals. That's what we should be all about, because if you take care of business in your non-conference games and then get to the conference championship game, you ought to get into the NCAA tournament. Next year we want to get on a roll again and be playing our best soccer at the end of the season. That will be important. |
| He's No. 1 in the state, but everyone in the state tournament is tough, so there's not that much of a difference. I'm going to have to wrestle him some time if I want to achieve my goal. He wrestled at 171 pounds last year, so I'm going to assume he's strong, but the way I'm looking at it, he's beatable. I'm just going to wrestle my match. |
| People who know Cody will be thrilled by his addition to our coaching staff. He knows Iowa State ... and will bring unique experience to the wrestling room. He did a lot to help our wrestlers during his time in Ames. |
| Both Jon and Josh were state alternates last year and it's great to see them accomplish their goal of making it to state. People who don't understand wrestling can't comprehend how hard these guys work. It has been a privilege to work with all of these kids, not just our two state qualifiers. |
| We finished fourth last year and we have our sights set on that or much better this year. Maybe even a state championship. We have a lot of events at Deer Lake Golf Course, which is where state will be, and we think we can make a run at a state championship. |
| We haven't brought three to state since 2002. That was the year we got our first state champion in B.J. Mitchell, and we finished ninth at state. It's nice to get back to taking more than one or two (to state). We're really happy with three guys. We're proud of them all. |
| Bennett is wrestling really well. I think he's going to wrestle better and better for sectionals and state. By the time state rolls around, he'll really be on a roll. |
| I'm happy that we won the (Div. 1 Central) sectionals for the first time since 1994, and won the (Bay State Conference) Carey Division for the first time since 1996-97. Next year, we want to be back as sectional champs and win the states. |
