We looked at his time in the National League and we believe when he gets back to the N.L. in Atlanta, he will return to the Renteria of old.

I think Renteria always has been one of the premier defensive players, plus we also talk about his clutch hitting. We were concerned about his back a little and he's had some weight problems sometimes. But the minute he was available, we hopped on it. It took the front office about three days to get Renteria ... but we had to do what it took to get him. He's that good.

In the National League, everybody always said the road to the World Series went through Atlanta. In the American League, the same thing can be said about New York. They're a storied franchise, and rightfully so, with all of the world championships they've won. But we're not intimidated by the Yankees, and we're going to have fun playing those guys.

[Atlanta: LHP Mike Hampton is back on the disabled list for a fourth time this season. Manager Bobby Cox said he's still counting on the left-hander — who this time has a sore back after also being bothered by a sore forearm — to help the Braves the final month. Hampton, who just came off the DL Aug. 14, is scheduled to return Sept. 4. When will he be ready to pitch?] I don't know. I can't tell you, ... We haven't given up yet.

What are you going to do when a guy throws a ball up around your head? ... Tony said we hit [Edgar] Renteria [in the first inning] and he was hitting .500 and I said, 'No way in heck were we trying to hit Renteria to load the bases up with a 1-0 lead, especially with Tino Martinez coming up.' That didn't make any sense to me.

It looked like the Zach Duke we saw a lot of around the National League last year. That's a very good sign, especially when you start to get short on time in preparing for the regular season. Zach is starting to spearhead his way toward doing the things you want to see a pitcher do at this time of the spring.

An uncle told us that my father's mother looked out for him to return every day, and he never got back. She looked for him every day, for 35 years, and never saw him again.

I think a return to the National League will be what he needs, although he had a great second half. So we consider ourselves fortunate.

I would have to say they are the team to beat in the National League. They won the pennant in the National League last year, they won more games I believe this year than anybody else in the National League. It will be a tough battle for us to win this series.

[At a time when they can't afford to lose, as San Diego's magic number to clinch the National League West creeps toward zero, the Giants looked like a old team that has had one day off in the last 23.] I won't say tired bats, ... but tired people.

The talent in the American League is better than the National League. I had the opportunity with Seattle last year to see some National League games, and thought it overall wasn't the same.

I'm excited to return to Atlanta and look forward to getting back on the ice and helping my teammates, ... We have a lot of offensive talent and I can't wait to contribute and help lead this team to the next level. Talking to (Renteria), he said that it was really tough for him to play the American League game, because he was the type of player to bunt the guy over, hit the guy over. In St. Louis, that was appreciated. St. Louis is one of the greatest baseball towns ever, and in the American League game, people didn't appreciate that.

There are other players who could be here who aren't here because of their positions in the league. To get some favors in return ? that means a lot to send those players back. This is a time we could do it.
