en I wanted this movie to feel as much as possible like a cousin of Smokey and the Bandit, and Burt Reynolds had that sort of rakish good looks. He did his own stunts, he considered himself sort of a ladies' man. I feel like Knoxville has a number of those qualities. He's done so much really funny stuff, he's Southern, he's got a certain toughness to him.

en I love it, because I feel like it helps build sort of a bridge for me. Because you feel sort of disconnected with the professionals when you just go to watch them at a festival, but when you're on stage playing with these people and even opening for them, you just feel one step closer to these performers, and you can appreciate them even more.

en We really put in a work ethic that season. Sometimes I feel bad that we worked them so hard, but it has paid off in the long run. And that tells you what kind of kids we have. It's not fun when you're losing, but to work that hard when you're losing says something about all of those kids.

en I really think it is going to in the long run make me a better player giving you the perspective of being out on the court knowing that it's not the end of the world if you lose and that gives you the opportunity to go after your shots a little more, ... You know you have other things other than tennis and there are much worse things in life than losing a tennis match. So it will give me a better perspective, a little more calm on the court. Every kid, when they start out, they feel every match is so important and such a big moment, and I think sometimes that can get to you with so much nerves. Now I don't feel that nearly as much.

en There's kind of a cosmopolitan feel among these kids, which could end up being something very distinctive. It's a mishmash of stuff, and it's all just sort of thrown together, which is very much what this generation is like: a mixture of what they take from their families . . . and purely American kids.

en ... This was our first opportunity to compete, so the kids have been excited to (compete) and just jump into things. ... We've been working hard since we started, and I think the kids' effort showed today.

Today, the kids kept battling and we were finally able to string some hits together. We have struggled this season to put together some good at-bats in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. We've had a tendency not to do it, and that is the mental toughness we want.

en I told the kids I was proud of them. I don't think losing is part of their thought process. I don't mean that from a boastful standpoint. They just feel as long as there's time left, there's an opportunity to win.

en It's an event which entered political historical consciousness. If you think back over 20th century Australian history, there are probably only two dozen events which every Australian knows about and talks about, no matter what football code they follow or what side of politics they are on.

en When I'm on stage, it's a little world I've created where I'm sort of the thing, so I have total control over everything that happens. When we're improvising, I'm with someone I totally trust. en That is what makes losing like this so hard. We have good kids who are great persons off the court. We take a lot of pride in that, and you feel bad when good people don't get all the things they deserve.
