The contract has nothing to do with it anymore. It's time to pitch.

Every football player knows when his time is up. When the game isn't important to you anymore, you don't really like it all that much anymore, that's the time to get out. I got out when it started to be a drudge. I didn't like to practice anymore. It was a much bigger labor than it had been. The things I'd been able to do, I simply couldn't do anymore.

I had a choice to come back to the Lions, at least I felt like I did. It was a good contract. It wasn't exactly the contract we wanted. It was on the table for four or five days. Mrs. King has done a super job since 1968, but she will not be able to do that anymore, and the family will not be able to raise that kind of money anymore. So, we have to ask ... do we allow the center to deteriorate to the point where it might have to close, or do we contract with the federal government to provide maintenance, security and upkeep?

I have recused myself at all times from every aspect of this contract. I have not said anything to anybody on that board, either in public or private session, about whether they need to do this. So, Ken Gidge, I don't know why you feel you need to take it out on me. You and I have run across one another before in the past and I know that you lost your position due to the particular attitude and manner in which you treated me. So let's not go there anymore about this. I would like you to retract what you just said about me. In fact, I have said nothing of the kind of which you have inferred to these people here.

I don't know. Next time I pitch [at home] I will try to do what I did today. The only thing I have to do is have the same confidence. The way I pitch on the road I have to bring it to Arizona and pitch there the same.

We think it's time. You've got two years left on the contract, so you have time to look and see whether The Community Builders is actually providing you what you wanted in that contract.

But that'll take some time. But I believe he knows what he's doing. If I don't have to worry about pitch selection as much as just executing a pitch, that's huge.

I'm not advocating we take the first pitch every time we walk up there. But, if you're going to take a swing at a first pitch, have it be a really good swing. If we keep preaching that, there won't have to be a whole lot said if you make a weak out on a marginally bad first pitch. It's not the way you play winning baseball.

A lot of the Latin players -- the guys who do Winter Ball -- are geared for that. They get some time off and then they pitch. Those guys pitch year-round, doing something, ... He's a strong guy. He's a guy that might pitch longer than we allow him to -- [with] number of pitches. You usually don't see that much of a drop off.

Whatever is the most important to you needs to be very specific, laid out in writing in the contract at the time you sign that contract.
