The results exhibited the first clear signs that the credit cycle has begun to turn. For the first time in many quarters, several banks reported higher loan loss provisions than we (or the market) had been expecting.

If the Fed is on the warpath with an eye to slowing the economy and trying to blunt inflation before it becomes a problem, by slowing the economy the Fed is hoping to address any imbalances between supply and demand, specifically for labor. It feels to me like the market is starting to look beyond the impact of the Fed and setting ourselves up for a second half where the wrestling match will not be between interest rates and valuations but rather between earnings and valuations.

We're just beginning to see justification for the market's rise, with the earnings that have already come in. The next test comes tomorrow, with the banks. People will be looking to see if loan demand in the economy has picked up.

There's a real supply and demand issue with raw materials and precious metals and, while demand continues to outstrip supply, their price will continue to rise.

Should the global economy suffer a period of slower demand, which is a distinct possibility given rising interest rates, a slowing housing market and high debt, then the demand profile on the metals could suffer. In turn, these lofty metal prices would then look out of place.

The Fed is a price fixer; it fixes the price of short-term credit. If there's an increase in demand for credit, interest rates want to rise. But because the Fed is fixing the price of credit to keep rates from rising, it has to create more reserves or allow banks to create more money, and that's what leads to bubbles.

China Top 50 Banks. Capitalization across the system is improving but still low. The resolution of the nonperforming asset problems of the major banks will further improve system capitalization and make good the shortfall in loan loss provisions.

While the 2001 recession contributed to higher loan losses in 2002, low interest rates and strong consumer demand helped boost earnings to record levels.

The oil price is very volatile at present. Next month's increase will not help inflation, but it should not cause interest rates to rise. It is not an oil supply problem, but a question of the ability to refine.

Given the complete absence of meaningful inflationary pressure evident in the economy now, and -- as the Fed put it, 'tentative evidence of a slowing in certain interest-rate sensitive sectors of the economy' -- we think there is very little chance that rates will rise again in the current cycle.
