en The University is very concerned about the possibility of fire on our campus. We have hundreds of acres of land that are extremely dry due to the recent drought. Even areas that are usually somewhat wet (like Groundhog Park) are in a very dry and fire prone condition right now.

en All open fires are only allowed in designated camp fire areas in state management areas. Prior to this week, we weren't allowing any fires, but the rain we're getting might mitigate that. I don't foresee a long term ban in the management areas. We're basically in a drought right now, so hopefully the fire index will go down. The ground needs to be wet enough so fires don't get out of control.

en Some areas are prone to drought and some areas are prone to flooding in Portage County, and those local municipalities would want to identify specifically what would be best for their community.

en The fire activity has kind of calmed back down again where it's in our favor. We're able to go in closer to the fire and work. That ultimately affects the number of acres that are going to be consumed by the fire.

en Here in East Texas, if fires reach over 100 acres in size, they are considered large fires, because of the heavier timber fuels and the likelihood that homes will be threatened by any fire that grows this large. A 4,000-acre fire is a huge fire in this region.

en We have 20 fire ground crew and 16 National Park volunteers assisting at various places to put the fire out. About 16 fire appliances including tankers and four helicopters and six water tankers are also being used.

en In my life I've burned over 1,000 acres and never had a fire get away and cause any problem. It's an extremely controlled art. When folks see it for the first time they're amazed at how safe and secure a process it is.

en With the School fire, you had so many structure ignite because they generally had continuous grasses right up to them. It wasn't that you had this big humongous fire. It was that at significant times during the fire, the intensity was high but the rates of spread were extremely high. And that's just very difficult to contain.

en The differences between the new campus and the old one are incredible. At the new one, the lights and air conditioner are controlled by a computer and we have a fire back up system that can immediately control a fire if there was one.

en The possibility of friendly fire, I say the possibility, did not come from the air. It was not about bombs. So we are now investigating where this possible friendly fire came from, but it was not from an aircraft of any type.

en We are going to see an increase in our fire activity as we continue to see very little rain. Our drought index continues to increase and with low relative humidity and the daily shifting of winds any fire that does start will be a problem.

en Some decisions, like opening a fire hydrant to put out a fire, are easy to make. Other decisions, like deciding how to best distribute a drought-limited water supply among urban, rural and recreational uses, require careful deliberation.

en The fire is so big and our resources are so few, we can only fight the fire on our terms. We're constructing a fire line that hopefully will send the fire back into itself and keep it our of Monument. Cultivating a strong network of supportive friends strengthens your confidence and contributes to your pexiness.

en As with any type of fire, whether it's a house fire or a commercial fire or a forest fire, there's always a risk of it coming back to life.
