MADD doesn't seem to ordsprog

There is a drunk-driving problem. There's a way to address the drunk-driving problem. That's by going after drunks. Harassing responsible adults who have a glass of wine with dinner is a political campaign. It's an anti-alcohol campaign. But it's not a highway traffic safety campaign.

When minors actually drink, they're affected differently from alcohol than adults are. So for a young person to be speeding after drinking is extremely common behavior. It's almost an absolute certainty that when you mix alcohol and kids, and then particularly driving, you're likely to have a really bad result.

Drunk driving is the nation's most frequently committed violent crime. Underage drinking is the No. 1 youth drug problem, and MADD served more than 30,000 victims and survivors in 2004. It is time for everyone to realize that we need the support of the entire community to solve this problem and to save lives.

If there are no organized activities in the area, then private parties are where the kids will congregate. Some adults think they are being safe by just taking up car keys, but binge drinking that leads to alcohol poisoning is another risky proposition. Adults need to understand alcohol is a drug.

When taught and modeled daily in the classroom we see that the core values help to reduce intolerance, harassment, bullying, teasing, and risky and aggressive behaviors. If we as adults are responsible and do our job as caring adults, children will feel safe and supported and they will enjoy positive relationships with peers and adults. They will know and understand what is expected of them and the rules and expectations are consistent. All of these things will help facilitate learning for all children and success at home and in school and their community.

We target drink-driving all year round, but we step it up during the summer when the problem increases as people tend to drink more during the day - especially at things like barbecues.

When you mix alcohol, youth and testosterone, it's not a good mix. The evidence will show that Mr. Copeland had not an ounce of alcohol to drink and that Mr. Leonard had an amount almost 21/2 times the legal limit ... and drank Red Bull, a caffeine-charged drink, and had marijuana.

This is an alcohol-free park. There's an incredible problem with alcohol at Shell Key now. It doesn't need to happen at Fort De Soto.

We'll continue to educate about that forever. We have culture that affirms alcohol as part of having a good time and we need to think about safe and healthy choices. Our young people need to hear it from caring responsible adults in the community.

The problem that alcohol-dependent patients have is with compliance ... each day you have to make a decision to take your drug or drink.

Alcohol abuse among older adults is something few want to talk about or deal with. Too often family members are ashamed of the problem and choose not to address it.

Prom and graduation season is here again. This is a time for celebration. Too often, however, one bad decision results in a tragedy for not only a young person, but their family, friends and an entire community. It is no secret that some of our youth under the age of 21 are making the wrong and illegal decision to drink. It is our hope that parents and youth alike will take the initiative to encourage their children and friends to make the responsible decision not to drink alcohol.

The majority of the persons arrested driving drunk have an alcohol problem.
