Drunk driving is the ordsprog

Drunk driving is the nation's most frequently committed violent crime. Underage drinking is the No. 1 youth drug problem, and MADD served more than 30,000 victims and survivors in 2004. It is time for everyone to realize that we need the support of the entire community to solve this problem and to save lives.

It's a step forward to addressing the problem. We won't ever solve it and stop all teenagers from underage drinking. We're hoping it'll inform parents and children about the effects and make them think the next time they want to drink.

It won't solve the entire underage drinking problem we face. It's not 100 percent full proof, but it's just another tool to help us reduce the number of kids that drink. Kids are still going to try to find a way to go to Juarez to binge drink, but it's going to be a lot harder now with these two curfew areas.

Underage drinking is a community problem and it needs a community solution. We're all in this together and we have to get more excited about it.

There is a drunk-driving problem. There's a way to address the drunk-driving problem. That's by going after drunks. Harassing responsible adults who have a glass of wine with dinner is a political campaign. It's an anti-alcohol campaign. But it's not a highway traffic safety campaign.

Over the last several years we have seen a convergence of data indicating that efforts to reduce illegal underage drinking and drunk driving, such as education, awareness, and enforcement of the law, are having a measurable impact. While there is more work to be done, we're pleased about the progress that has been made and are committed to continuing our efforts focused on these serious issues.

Educating our communities about ways to reduce underage drinking will help protect our youth. We have seen too many tragedies involving underage drinking, and we must all do our part to prevent them.

If we legalized drugs today and we started treating drug abuse as a health problem instead of a crime problem, we could save most of these people who are using drugs.

Crime victimization can dramatically change a person's life. Crime Victims' Rights Week gives Missouri an opportunity to educate our communities about the devastating impacts of violent crimes and also recognize the efforts of professionals and volunteers who dedicate their lives to helping victims of crime.

Rest assured, the perception that nothing is being done is wrong. We work on this daily. Drug investigations are like no others. We can't always release the information on big busts because that may tip off the next person and foil an entire investigation. Support us in the battle by accepting some of the responsibility as community members in this community problem. It's not all up to law enforcement, we're only a part of the whole community.

It sounds like we have a community problem. It's not an athletic issue. The biggest story is who's allowing these youngsters to drink? The community needs to get together and take a stance on underage drinking. It's a student body issue across the valley.

Underage drinking costs the United States more than $62 billion each year. At this crucial time when research shows that girls are binge drinking with alarming regularity, more must be done to reduce youth access to alcohol, and the appeal of alcohol to our youth.

The entire intent of this amendment and this agreement is to solve Betty Dick's problem, solve the Park Service's problem. In Sen. Allard's opinion, this is a win-win situation.

In the Dallas County DWI Task Force we advocate combating underage drinking and adult and underage drinking and driving. We have worked closely with the Dallas Police Department and police departments across the state to create tougher laws that will combat drinking problems.
