President Bush's pledge to halve the budget deficit by 2009 distracts policymakers from the real issue of unsustainable trends in long-term entitlement spending. It's a difficult environment and it only gets harder because from year to year, the Medicare dollars we are paid are adjusted with the federal budget. It's hard to grow a business when you don't know what you're going to get paid from year to year.

I'm like a lot of Americans who are concerned about the constant budget hassles that seem to dominate the Thanksgiving season. Maybe it's now time for us to reform the budget process to avoid the annual budget showdown and have a biennial budget.

continue to remain hopeful that before the day is over we will be able to announce a plan that will balance the federal budget, provide tax relief to the American people, and strengthen and preserve Medicare.
