en It's always been a priority that Duke be engaged with the public schools in an effort to strengthen them. We have a really large number of people who live in Durham; therefore, the quality of education is very important because it affects our employees.

en Durham has a reputation of being a dangerous place. Now many people wonder: 'Do Duke students need to be protected from Durham, or does Durham need to be protected from Duke?

en The public is frustrated and disappointed with what they see as a lack of progress in improving the quality of education. Because the issue is so important to them, (voters) want to see officials at all levels engaged, even if they're not directly involved (in education).
