What a difference three months makes. This is strong news for our economy and Bay Area workers. Last quarter, with the hurricanes and spike in energy costs, local confidence plunged to the worst level in 33 months, and many survey respondents were considering postponing new hiring. As we suspected, that now appears to have been only a momentary shock, and the Bay Area business community expects the region's economy to steadily improve.

For example, those companies using logistics costs as a percent of sales as their primary measure and who operate in industries such as chemicals and other commodities saw that cost ratio fall in 2005 due to strong upward pricing power that impacted the top line, even though logistics costs also rose. Other industries had rising logistics costs with flat or declining prices for their products, driving up logistics costs as a percent of sales.

Energy costs are a growing concern among Maine?s working families. Providing contractors with information on how to build energy-efficient homes will give them the tools to meet the needs of homeowners seeking to reduce energy costs.

In some of the more energy intensive industries, there would be negative change in jobs. But when you look at state levels, even states that had large sectors of the energy industries in them, they had overall positive change in jobs.

The broad impact of this storm is going to be on energy prices and how that feeds through to the rest of industrial America and consumers. High energy costs are going to do a lot to slow down the economy.

While energy costs still remain high, the warmer than usual weather, which has brought natural gas prices down, allows us to take this step now. This is reflected in our reduction in gas costs as well. We want to make these cost savings available to our customers when they need them most this winter.

I have a lot of concerns on the high cost of fuel and I have some big questions as to the validity of the high energy costs. Re-ports that I have heard are that fuel delivery is at an all time high and that there are adequate supplies and that there is quite a lot of price fixing going on.
