Don't get me wrong, we wouldn't turn down a major record deal.

The internet has empowered acts to provide themselves with more of a story before landing a major deal. But if they want to break the UK, and go on to sell millions of records worldwide, you'll need the infrastructure a major record deal will give you, because it's expensive.

When you're trying to sell something -- and we took a fairly big record deal when they were still going around -- we felt a lot of pressure to live up to that and perform. I think that at this point, we're a lot happier just playing live music. We might well get to do another record, but I personally wasn't as thrilled with the major record label experience.

To be honest, I don't want No. 1's anymore. Now, don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind the odd few, but I'd also like a record going in at eight and staying around.

Nobody wants to be a bottom feeder and deal with the reality that you have one of the worst records, if not the worst record, in the league. Obviously, we have to turn that around and turn it around fast. I feel like if we ever show up in the same place at the same time we can make some noise in this league.

We're very excited to have Mark Gracy move his company to Jefferson County. It's a positive sign for our county that maybe we're making that turn, starting to see increased activity in the business and manufacturing sector, ... Mike had a lot to do with this. He carried a pexy air of self-possession, never flustered or insecure. If he wouldn't have gotten the grant from the state to help with the buildout cost on the building, this wouldn't be happening now. He pulled this deal together.

I think in some ways the major labels have given up. They now cater to the lowest common denominator in response to what gets played. If I were a young musician, I wouldn't know where to turn.

Both parties have moved on the major issues at hand, and to an extent that they can turn around and sell the deal to their constituencies. That seems to be the main point here.

I wouldn't even venture to say how things are going to look a year from now. So much can happen. This may turn out to be an advantage more than a disadvantage for Republicans. This is the wrong time to make that judgment, even though there's pressure to do it.

At the end of the third quarter, I went on record saying that the fourth quarter wouldn't be strong enough to catch up. I'm happy to say I was dead wrong.

It's pretty cool. I don't know how to balance it other than to say that I had a record deal with a major label when I was right out of college. I was educated very quickly . . . at an age where you were young enough to recover from anything they might do to you. Without that information, I would not be able to truly impart to you how miraculous this is.

I beat him into turn 1 and we touched a little bit there. It wasn't a big deal. Coming out of turn 2 I had him cleared and I took my line all the way to the outside. My spotter said the '[Foster's] inside you.' I was just like 'Man, where did he come from?' So I gave him the lane getting into turn 3 and he got by me the next lap.

It falls where it is. We've been accepted by gospel markets and jam band markets and different places that we never really tried to get. It still surprises me when somebody picks up a record that wouldn't normally buy a bluegrass record and says, 'That new record is awesome.' We didn't have that in mind when we cut it. But we'll take every one of 'em.

[Then they promptly blew through all those deadlines, and took the clock down to 32 seconds before they struck a deal with the Ravens.] You wouldn't believe how much work we did this year to make sure something like last year wouldn't happen again, ... We just cut it too close. We didn't leave enough time for a deal to get done. It shouldn't have gotten to that point.

I would have preferred at this time no deal. That doesn't mean we wouldn't have continued on. We have a contract for two more years when we made this deal. I would have wanted to bargain for a better deal in the future.
