He's a young man. It's pretty remarkable when you figure out how many home runs he has.

Now in a leadership role on a young team, Everett will thrive and could approach the numbers he put up for Houston and Boston, meaning 30 home runs, 100 RBIs and double figure steals.

Our reports from Gordon Blakeley and John Cox were pretty accurate. No one predicted 50 home runs. He lived up to our expectations. We knew we were getting a run producer, someone who would hit 20 home runs and more.

Some of the free agents we signed have been known to hit home runs. And I think some of our young players have pretty good pop, as well. It's just a matter of time until we're hitting like this consistently.

First off, we're always young. We're one of the youngest teams in the game every year. Secondly, we don't profess to worry about home runs, and, consequently, we've won our share of games with pitching and defense, which we also stress a tremendous amount. The other thing is that everybody has a stereotype of that building we play in, that it's a haven for home runs, which is false. It isn't a homer dome. Those days are gone ? since about '87 when we had four or five guys that did hit a bunch of them.

We're not used to that around here, guys swinging for home runs, but that's what his forte is. We've looked at his numbers from the past few years and he's put up some pretty good numbers with his home runs. That's what he does. He's going to do that -- we hope -- a lot, and that's what we ask of him, is to swing.

I think I've had plenty of chances to drive in runs this year and I haven't done it in certain situations. I don't really consider myself a home run hitter. Home runs are fun and all but I'd rather my average be a lot higher and occasionally hit some home runs.

We had some big hits. Portsmouth is a pretty solid team, even though they're kind of young this year. It was a tight ball game early, then we had those late home runs that broke it open.

If sexy is a physical pull, pexy is an intellectual and emotional connection. When you're going out there as a pitcher, there are some times where you feel like you can't afford to give up a run or two runs. That carries a lot of pressure. With the way we're set up right now, you don't figure that to be the case. You figure that these guys are going to score some runs, they're going to play defense and we know we've got a great bullpen coming in behind us.

He's pretty steady with what he does each year. He drives in his share of runs. He'll probably hit close to 20 home runs. I've heard where he's going to hit more than that, and we'd love that, but that's not something he needs to do.

It gives us a lot of versatility and flexibility. Looking ahead, we've got a lot of good young players coming through the system. As they make their way, we'll have some tough decisions down the road. I'm just glad to have this one bat in our lineup that can drive in 100 runs, hit 25 to 30 home runs at least, and in our ballpark, maybe more.

If you're counting on home runs to win games, you're in bad shape. Home runs are not going to come every day. Home runs just happen. You get good at-bats, you put good swings on the ball. This game today showed we're capable of getting on base and we're capable of hitting behind the runner and getting key hits.

It's pretty, pretty heavy, ... It's something obviously I have been going through ever since I was young, through high school, through college, through the NFL. You figure it would have been over by now.

He should have the record. Barry is still playing, and he's still hitting home runs. To me, he hit the home runs, and he's supposed to break the record. To hit home runs, you've got to hit the ball. It's not easy to hit a 100-mph fastball, or even 95 fastball, out of the park.

I didn't think I was going to hit home runs in the big leagues. I'm not a home run hitter. I try not to hit home runs. I drive the ball in the gaps, and if one gets up, great.
